Summer Traffic Seen Firsthand by DOT Head MILLVILLE - Following what the assemblyman termed a friendly faceoff on state highway hotspots in Cumberland and Cape May Counties. State Dept, ot Transportation chief Louis Gambaccini told Assemblyman Jamps Hurley it would take a billion dollars to upgrade and maintain New Jersey's highway system. Gambaccini told Hurley he would be presenting a new funding mechanism to the legislature later this

year.

During the recent geltogether there were on-site examinations of traffic clogged intersections where problems were explained by Cape May County Freeholder Jack Bittner, county Engineer Neil Clark, county Director of Transportation Hack Salvesen, and Deputy Director Arthur Blomkvest. Frank Parker, the DOT’S chief .engineer, accompanied Gambaccini. Particular attention was given to Stone Harbo*Blvd.and Crest Haven Rd., intersections with the Garden State Pky. Assemblyman Hurley proceeded alone into Qjmberland County with Commissioner Gambaccini and Parker. While on Rt. 55 Gambaccini said land acquisitions for the north extension were in an advanced stage. The commissioner revealed it was impractical to Complete Rt. 55 as a freeway since the cost of completing the road north ware has escalated to $150 million, compared to $70 million to finish it as an expressway. The expressway concept, with numerous traffic signals at intersections, has been opposed by groups all over South Jersey, Hurley said. “Either we do it as an expressway or we may not be abl^f to build it." Gambaccini remarked “I’ve come to love southern New Jersey." Gambaccini, who is a Connecticut native, said "there is- a lot of beauty down here'no one knows about upstate.”
