Sounds

By Chrles P. Umey ;

If England's Troggi had remained in oblivion, they would’ve still gone down in history for producing one of the most grazed rockers, "Wild Thing," and one of the best ballads, "Love Is All Around," Jhe world of rock and roll has ever seen. Their raw, primitive sound has often been dealt with harshly by the critics, and it’s true they aren’t great musicians or vocalists. But, The Troggs are from the same school that produced The Kinks and Rolling Stones and that means they’re their strongest when they’re their crudest. ALTHOUGH THEY slipped from the national charts, The Troggs have never stopped recording or touring. Their new album, "Live At Max's Kansas City” (MKC), proves they haven’t lost their magic touch. The Troggs do a few credible covers, such as "Satisfaction," "Got Love If You Want It,” "Walking The Dog,’’ and "No Particular Plhce To Go," but the highlights are the nasty originals, like "Strange Movies,” "Summertime)' "Give It To Me,” and the classic “Wild Thing." THE BACK to basics approach of the new wave makes the Sixties’ sound of The Troggs sound contemporary. It’s great having them back, and.

hopefully, enough record buyers will feel the same. I don't feel like waiting a couple of years for their album. Not to downgrade the fellows in Los Angeles' The Motels, but Martha Davis is*their real strength. As a lead singer, her salty attitude and jazz-like phrasing adds depth to the straight-forward, hard-dr-iving backing the guys provide. Their second album, “Careful'’ (Capitol), is an enjoyable album that promises great things are in store for The Motels. “TRUTH DECAY’* (Takoma) is a wild debut from T-Bone Burnette. He doesn’t break any new ground in the Fields of country or rockabilly, but his easy-going attitude and pleasant voice are instantly likeable. T-Bone Burnette might be doomed for only cult status, but everyone who hears him is going to have fun. "Rave On” (Ariola) is the great album Artful Dodger only hinted they were capable of the first three times around. Influenced by mis-Sixties British bands, as well as American groups such as The Byrds, Artful Dodger write catchy, memorable tunes and they sing them with enthusiasm. Artful Dodger deserves a hit album.
