Firewood Sales Are Regulated TRENTON - If you think that all it takes is a chainsaw and perhaps a pick-up truck to be able to sell firewood, better not come out of the woods. The state's in the

act.

Actually — in an effort to protect the consumer — the state's entrv into the business of selling firewood isn’t new. The State Office of Weights and Measures, Div. of Consumer Affairs, Dept, of Law and Public Safety has been regulating the sale of firewood for some time. But now the inevitable has happened: the regulations are being amended, the terminology stripped of its Dark, the definitions honed

down.

CALL IT RED TAPE if you will; the fact is a tape measure should l\e standard equipment for both the seller and cautious buyer of firewood. Basically, state Weights and Measures rules decree that all firewood advertised or offered for sale shall be sold only in cord amounts or fractional parts of cord. However, It may be sold in package form (like you see in the supermarket) by net weight plus count when the individual packages are less than four cubic ft. (which is 1/32 of a cord). * THE STATE DEFINES A a cord as the amount of wood which is contained in a space of 128 cu. ft., when the wood is ranked and well stowed; the latter terminology meaning when pieces of wood are placed in a line or row, with individual pieces touching and parallel to each other, and stacked in a compact manner. Prohibited by the state are such terms as face cord, rack, pile, truckload, etc. when firewood is being advertised, offered

or sold.

(The traditional definition of a cord is a stack4x4x8ft.) irs WHEN THE FIREWOOD being sold is transported that the regulations become even more restrictive. The state is now requiring that a serialized delivery ticket or invoice ac(Page 3 Please) Growth Curbs

House for Fish Farming WASHINGTON. D C. - The House of Representatives has approved legislation . sponsored by Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) which would establish a full-scale aquaculture development program in the United States. • Hughes said the legislation is designed to promote the private development of fish farms and other aquaculture programs He said he hopes this program can bring the fledgling U.S. aquaculture industry up to the same level as Japan and other foreign nations which currently produce as much as 40 percent of their fisheries resources through aquaculture. I AM VERY enthusiastic about the prospects for a national aqiiaculturc industry." Hughes stated. ’’This industry has the potential to create thousands of new jobs, to help meet the growing demand for seafood products, and even to help reduce our balance of trade deficit "In particular. I think this industry has tremendous potential for South Jersey." he continued. “With our proximity to the ocean, and our expertise in farming. South Jersey is an ideal location for an aquaculture program. ’' Hughes pointed out that Congress approved an aquaculture development bill two years ago. but it was vetoed by President Carter as too costly He said the new bill was revised to meet the President 's objections, and he is optimistic that it will pass the Senate and be signed into law this year AQUACULTURE Is the commercial farming of salt water fish, shellfish and plants Although the industry has been in existence for more than 4.000 years, it accounts for only for three percent of total fisheries consumption in the U.S. By comparison, countries like Japan. Poland and China and Russia produce nearly ha If their fisheries resources through aquaculture. Hughes said aquaculture has a number of important benefits Commercial fish farms have a low risk of pollution and a wide range of products can be raised under controlled circumstancesi He stressed that aquaculture is not intenoed to replace the traditional fishing and shellfish industries.
