Well, the action has swung from the Ocean to the Bay again with big weakfish appearing in the 60 ft. Slough, Punk Grounds, Bug Light, and at selected spots inshore. There is still very good flounder action down in the Rips and off by Somers Shoal, and some of the experienced charter boat captains are still scoring on big blues, (actually the night chummers are producing more slammers though). But the emphasis this past week has been on those 2-to^-lb. weakfish, and some real nice flounder that have shown up on the Bay side. I SAW THE first mackerel sky appear on Monday night, and I’m still finding it hard to believe that it’s September and I'm writing columns on fishing like it's the middle of July. Mel Hearon of Goshen was telling me that he and his brother Bill went out right off Bidwells Crebk and got 55 nice weakfish in about 24 hours of fishing. Jim Delaney, who runs the Barbara out of Roseman's, had 58 nice weakies at the start of the week, fishing the 60 ft. Slough, and Ellery Bowman of Villas got two good days of fishing about
14 miles off Town Bank. I HAVEN'T. HAD a chance to talk with Ellery, but Jules Gold quoted him as saying they were practically jumping into the boat. I do know that Mel Hearon and his brother were using squid and shedder crab as bait, and this combination should really produce at this time of the year. I also think that anchoring helps once you’ve located the weakies. Bob Attilio of Bayview Marina told me he entered a 4 lb. 2 oz. croaker for his rental boats. I have yet to find out if this was a stray or the start of a run, but it's the biggest croaker I’ve heard of in 8 years. CPT. WALT HAAS on the Hawser found big blues on the South Shoal, and there’s still the feeling that there will be big catches this weekend, but I look for those big slammers to show up on the Mussel Beds way down to the south away from the chumming action. It’s not a bad time to try

bach fishing either, because the Cape may Company Hatteras anAnglers Surf Tournament proved that there are fish close In, in the surf. I look for snaper blues to make a big appearance soon around the inlets. Rich James of Pyrofax Gas in the Villas was telling me that Howard Severance was bringing in 200 to 300 pounds of weakfish a day dishing in the stakes in the upper Bay, so it still seems to me that the Bay is the best place to try. • • • EACH WEEK seems to bring a sad message. My old friend Warren Andrews passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7. He will be greatly missed by the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce, which he headed, and many other civic organizations in which he was extremely active. My friendship with Warren goes back to before World War II when he
managed Playland, which was a roller skating rink in Ocean City. I played roller hockey with him on a team called the Atlantic City Americans. ’ WARREN WAS one of the biggest boosters of the Delaware Bay Drumfish Derby, and lately he had been deeply involved with the reconstruction of the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce building. In fact, it was only about three months ago that he and I, under Bob Obermairs’ direction, put the aluminum siding on the building. Warren was a man who got totally involved in community affairs, and we will all miss his guidance and understanding. I FELT A deep personal loss because we’d been together before the war, got through that, and then met again in the Villas. It is fitting and proper that he will be laid to rest in the Cape May County Veterans cemetery as he gathered a Silver Star in France for his heroism. Another ship passes in the night, and you wonder how many more will pass before you reach the bar. Farewell, old friend, we’ll get the building done that we named after you, and your foresight will be long remembered.
Old Fro Jack Kemp Plays Dinner Circuit
CAPE MAY - Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.), the former all-AFL quarterback who was one of Ronald Reagan’s considerations in selecting a running mate for November, is to be hosted gy Republican congressional candidate Beech Fox at a fundraising dinner planned by the Fox for Congress Committee at the Golden Eagle Sept. 22. Kemp is serving his fifth term in the House of Representatives. He represents a blue-collar, 'industrial Democratic district of New York state. The congressman is author of the book "An American Renaissance: A Strategy for the 1980s," which deals with tax reforms to increase the
non-inflationary growth of the economy, development of new energy sources, and rebuilding the country's military capabilities to deter Soviet expansion. Kemp's successful legislative career was preceded by an equally successful 13-year career as a quarterback in professional football. He played with the San Diego Chargers and the Buffalo Bills. He was twice all-AFL quarterback. Kemp won the AFL’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1965 after leading the Bills to two successive league championships. He played in six pro all-star games and his jersey, No. 15, is in the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
Fisherman’s Day: Drum to Remember
OCEAN CITY - Next to catching fish, fishermen like to talk about it. Charles Doloway, of Blue Bell, Pa., and a member of the Ocean City Yacht Club, is still talking about his catch made while fishing for blues near Avalon Shore Bouy. He was one in a fleet of 50 boats casting lines at that spot late in August before landing an 81-pound black drum. THAT IS UNUSUAL for the time of year, but other circumstances has Doloway still telling about it. Doloway’s boat had pulled away from the rest of the fleet to look for fish when a surface commotion about two miles south of the bouy drew attention. Spotted heading south southwest was a school of drum feeding on the surface, mixed in with large blues.
AT APPROACH, the school sounded briefly but resurfaced 100 yards £way and continued in the same direction. There were no birds to call attention to the school, but their feeding activity created a wide slick on the water. The fisherman started casting — Doloway with a white surgical tube lure on 17-lb. test spinning tackle. AFTER DOLOWAY hooked into his drum, it took a half hour to bring the catch to the boat. There was no gaff hook aboard. The fish was boated by getting its head inside a big fluke net and grabbing it by the tail. After his big catch, Doloway discovered he had dislocated his thumb and elbow. His drum was weighed in officially for the 45th annual Cape May Fishing Tournament.
