The Champs
But How Did They Drop One?
CAPE MAY - The big bat of Kevin Sherman and the pitching of Jerry Griffin powered the Ugly Mug softball squad in its three-game sweep for the Mug’s fourth straight county title. The Ugly Mugs were presented with two trophies, one for the regular season title, earned by a 29-1 record. They also won the playoff championship trophy presented by the city dept, of Public Relations and Recreation, the league sponsor. The series tightened after Ugly Mug swamped the Coast Guard Bears 22-9 in the opener.
The Ugly Mug’s stout defense and timely hitting, however, were too much for the Bears in the remaining games, including the 6-5 nail-biter that wrapped up the championship. Sherman’s 10 for 11 heroics at the plate were backed up by Joey Tomlin, Chuck Matthews and Gene Zebrowski with key hits. Griffin was the winning pitcher in all three games. The Bears were paced by the defense of Sammy Rhodes, the pitching of Bill Zeplin and the batting of Frank Ishman.
THE UGLY MUG’S John Kanderan ‘heads’ into third with a successful slide during the Mug’s 6-5 conquest of the Coast Guard Bears to capture the Men’s Softball League championship. 6th Annual Memorial Run Slated
