Winning Ways Warriors’ Wish

by David Weinberg WILDWOOD - With 50 players on the varsity squad this season, secondyear football coach Don Reich has the depth that Wildwood High School has never possessed. Because they have only two players performing on both offense and defense, the Warriors hope to avoid the injuries that plagued last season’s 2-6 team. Field general for this year's offensive squad will be junior quarterback Rob Haney. Joining the backfield with Haney will be sophomore wingback Calvin Hayward, who according to Reich, "has looked very good in our scrimmages." Five other experienced players will also share backfield duties. ANCHORING AN offensive line that averages 180 lbs is center David Bradshaw. “David's mental and physical ap-

proach to the game has improved tremendously over last year.” notes Coach Reich. Other line standouts include senior guard Jeff Tomlinson, and tight end Timmy Turner. On defense, the Warriors will field an entirely senior line, led by end George Karavianglos and tackle Fred Grotse. Backing them will be middle linebacker Rich Wheaton, "a natural team leader," says Reich. Hayward, Wildwood Catholic transfer Mark Harmon, and Bob Kimball, provide excellent pass defense. "THE KEY TO our season lies in the first three games," explains Rfeich. “If we can get by St. Joseph's, Middle Township, and Ocean City without serious injury, while preserving a positive attitude, we should do respectable." Steve Vincent, and juniors Dave Cooper, Al Sloshman, and Ron Fine "could turn out as good as last season's top three," according to Emory. With the rest of the team dominated by freshmen and sophomores. Coach Emory feels "we should really come on strong at the end of the year." team back from last year's 5-5 team. Juniors Colleen Hughes and Kathy Robinson lead a squad that also features senior Debbie Alexander — who captured Cape Atlantic League honors two years ago but didn’t play last season. Sophomore Beth Bradway, juniors . Melanie Colson and "Tag" Miller, and senior Gail Ransom round out a strong

field.

"I AM VERY proud of my team," emphasizes Di Lorenzo. "Though all of our top seven players have high school experience, we are forced to compete against girls that have played tennis five or six years prior to entering high . school. We struggle, but the girls do very well, considering their amount of previous experience," the coach commented.

COURT HOUSE - Ideal weather coupled with an unprecedented supply of fish has given Jersey Cape anglers an excellent beginning to the fall fishing season, according to Lou Rodia, asst, director of Public Affairs for the county. In the post-Labor Day season, party, charter and private boats are locating large schoote of fluke, bluefish, weakfish and good numbers of sea bass, croakers, tuna, albacore and bonito. Warm waters are also attracting such exotics as wahoo, dolphin, trigger-fish and marlin. SURF FISHING has produced increasing numbers of bluefish, some weakfish, kingfish, and fluke, while inland waterway fishing has showed a leveling off in fluke catches, but weakfish and bluefish have started to hit for daytime as well as nighttime anglers. Night bluefish chumming activity has been made more appealing to anglers with the return of schools of big tiderunner weakfish which are now hitting in with the blues in the chum slicks. Blues and weaks have been in the five to 15 pound class and anglers are boating as many as 20 to 35per night. FREEHOLDER Anthony T. Catanoso, director of the county’s 45th annual Fishing Tournament, reminded anglers that the county contest runs through to Dec. 31, and that there is no registration fee ;or pre-registration

required to fish the county tournament. Party and charter boats will continue to operate well into fall.and boat liveries also remained open. Anglers are advised to call ahead to check on their favorite party boat sailing schedule. Clubs and organizations interested in fall fishing charters can make arrangements for an entire boat for their group and parties up to six can charter for offshore trolling as well as bottom fishing action.
