The high school authorities are again upset about an item the Old Sport wrote; this time on the Varsity Basketball Team's not being able to play in the Christmas Holiday Basketball Tournament at Mainland Regiona High School because the Athletic Committee wouldn’t approve the transportation expense. Now it appears the School Board has reversed the committee’s decision but this decision won't alter Chick Ludman't resignation as basketball coaeh. He feels the board has failed to support his attempts to set up a strong basketball program in Middle Township High School and he can ho longer go along with it. TOO BAD FOR Chick is perhaps the best coach in the C.A.L. now that Bernice McCracken has retired at Wildwood and he had the makings of a twoyear dynasty in the league with all the young material coming along. However, basketball is still a few months away, and he may be persuaded to change his mind. • • • THAT FLAG Football Game between the Democrats and Republicans is really shaping up with new recruits joining each team. Burdelle Schubert of the Middle Twp P.D. is the latest to join the ranks of Donkeys and Al Butler. Security officer at the County Correctional Institution. has signed up with the Elephants. Cpt. Dave May now has this roster to choose from: Gene Sanders. Walt Turnier, Joey Trombetta. Mike Vlstenzo. Pat Peterson. Chuck Mcllvain. and Burdelle Schubert. Cpt. Gerry Thornton has Bill Sturm. Ralph Evans, Bob Ifentges, Paul Thompson, Mike McLaughlin, Bruce Back, and Al butler. And Phil Matulucci and his "Golden Toe" may be brought out of mothballs. Add to that list

the athletic duo of Beech Fox Sr. and his son Beech Jr. and it makes up a formidable line-up. Watch for further developments! BY THE TIME this column appears. Band Director Dick Ludwig and his Panther Marching Band will have performed in the Firemen's Convention Parade in Wildwood. The formerly rotund maestro now showing a svelte figure says his band is bigger and better than ever this year which should mean more awards and trophies for the Panthers! WITH THE football team working out the band going through maneuvers, the soccer team paracticing and the field hockey going through their paces, Meadowlands Field behind the high school is a beehive of activity.

Dorto Ward GETTING INTO the swing of things for yeiterday's opener against Sacred Heart at Vineland is Lower Cape May Regional senior Val Cullen, here practicing at the Cape May Tennis Club. First home match Is 3:3# Friday against Ocean City.

Also, a cloud of dust because of the lack of a watering system to wet down the turf. If anyone has a few hundred feet of

garden hose, please offer it to coach Phil Exley and they’ll be able to wet down the field.

Grand Slam Derby For Adults

SEA ISLE CITY - The First Annual Grand Slam Derby will be held at Dealy Field Saturday. Sept. 27 it was announced by Mayor DominicC. Raffa. Raffa noted that The Grand Slam Derby is an adult version of the popular Phillies Home Run Derby, held annually in Sea Isle City for the past nine years. "SO MANY PARENTS and adults who have watched the kids participate in the Home Run Derby have wanted to try it," Raffa said, "so we have set up this adult program." The staff of The Derby had ' a machine that automatically throws a softball that everyone can hit every time. "In fact," Mayor Raffa noted.

"people who haven't hit a ball in years or maybe never hit one have fun competing.” THE SCORING of the Grand Slam Derby is the same as the youngsters’ program. Each batter gets five or 10 pitches. The field is marked and points are scored for hit* over the markers. City Recreation Director Steve Libro is chairman of the derby, and about 500 persons are expected to participate. There will be engraved plaques, T-shirts and other prizes awarded.
