Veil Aim: Tighten Welfare

COURT HOUSE - Democratic freeholder candidate Michael J. VoU has called for the hiring of four county welfare investigators to iiTOstigate all applicants for^relfare payments in Cape May County. Voll, who recently visited the welfare offices, said he is concerned with the present method of granting claims under which welfare condidates may receive benefits with virtually no follow-up to determine if a claim Is legitimate. “I BELIEVE‘THAT we must honor those claims which are legitimated and we must sincerely help those people who are in need of our assistance, but presently there are no incentives to require able bodied persons to obtain a job when they can, in fact, work at a paying Job,” he said. *1 am concerned that welfare is becoming a way of life for many people in Cape May County and we mist put an end to this immediately." VOU. REVEALED there are currently 1,500 families collecting welfare payments in Cape May County to the tune of almost $5 million last year. "It is my belief that the addition of four full-time investigators would not only reduce welfare expenditures considerable, but we could pay the in-

vestigators’ salaries at the same time.” he went on. “MOREOVER.THE current welfare system is so arranged so that the person can collect unemployment and welfare at the same time without getting caught for at least a

year.

"I am not against the principle of helping people who arein need of our assistance, he said, “ but I am against a person collecting welfare who is living with a boyfriend, living with a spouse who

allegedly deserted, or a person who can work but

won’t.”

THE TAXPAYERS today want fiscal responsibility In government and it is my intention to. see that the welfare system is operated according to the letter of the law in Cape May County,”

bests ted.

"I am firmly convinced that we can reduce welfare expenditures by 25 percent through the elimination of

fraudulent claims."
