Annuity Hike Due

VILLAS - The National Assoc, of Retired Federal Employees, Cape May Chapter 1197, met at the Millman Center Sept. 11, when Chapter President William Walker called the meeting to order with 55 members present. One of the first orders of business was the announcement by Legislative Officer John DiFilippo that because of inaction by Congress on the 1981 Budget Reconciliation Bill, the current law will initiate a 7.7 percent cost of living allowance as of Sept. 1. payable in annuity checks to be received on Oct. 1. MR. DiFLILPPO also

announced the receipt of a letter from the county supervisor of Veterans Internment for an $85 donation toward the Cemetery Memorial at the new Veterans Cemetery at Crest Haven. Other business concerned coming Legislature meetings and an announcement that the 1981 state convention will again be at the Golden Eagle in Cape May during the third week of May 1981. The next chapter meeting will be Oct.« at the Millman Center and all retired federal employees are invited to attend. — Vincent Hannigan

Bird Study Series Opens

CAPE MAY POINT - Clay Sutton will inaugurate Cape May Bird Observatory’s autumn lecture series with "Bird Studies at New Cape May” at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20. A biologist and photographer, Sutton Is an authority on the bird life of southern New Jersey, and will accompany his

presentation with slides. He will survey current bird ‘ populations and their habitats against the ornithological history of the area. The lecture will be held in the Fire Company Auditorium, Yale Avenue. A small donation will be requested at the door.

Another Condo Conversion

STONE HARBOR - Boro council was apprised at the Sept. 8 meeting that a variance has been granted to the Stone Harbor Inn to convert to condominium status and restructure the interior walls thereby upgrading its present usage as a restaurant plus 42 rooms.

The owners must retain the outside shell but may remove interior partitions so long as supportive walls aren’t adversely affected. The White Heron has already done this and the Shelter Haven is planning to do so with units costing in the neighborhood of $150,000.

Busy August For Police

AVALON - The last full month of summer kept police here on their toes, with the 183 criminal prrests made last month described as “much higher than last year." The August Police report also showed 33 arrests for noise violations and the issuance of 268 citations for speeding and the same number for parking violations. A TOTAL OF 63 motor vehicle accidents were investigated with 381 motor vehicle summons issued. There were “only” two arrests for drug violations, according to Chief Joseph Foley. Police were a Iso involved in 59 ambulance assists. THERE WERE 105 residential checks and 52 bank checks during August, the chief reported.

He also emphasized that anyone observing something suspicious or in violation of borough ordinance to immediately call Police at tM7-34it. Prosecutor To Talk Rights Of Landlord, Tenants CAPE MAY — County Prosecutor Donald Charles will be the guest speaker at the first fall meeting of the Village Greene Civic Association, 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. His topic will be "The Legal and Moral Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords. Agents, and Tenants." Applications for membership, dues collection and a business meeting will precede his talk.
