Restore Old Hall, He Urges
COLD SPRING-James MacDonald, Republican candidate for Township Committee, has called for the restoration of the Old Town Hall as soon as possible. "This landmark that was partially destroyed by fire s has been left to deteriorate. During the time following the fire and building of the new hall, plans should have been started. They were not," MacDonald stated. "THE DEMOCRATIC administration during that time seemed to ignore the issue. No one was informed how much insurance was received or what it was
spent for," he went on. "Our township needs additional space for offices, as well as a meeting room for various organizations. It is a good location for service to people in the Cold SpringErma area, as well as the entire township", he stated. "I AM THOROUGHLY convinced that a historic designation could be procured, and with this federal and st^te grants could be gotten. Areas surrounding us are constantly receiving grants for such projects, but we have not applied over the years.
"Lower Township has not taken advantage of the fact we are the largest municipality in the county. We also have an extremely large percentage of senior citizens. "THESE TWO factors should qualify the township for more aid and grants than we have gotten," MacDonald said. "The old hall is now an eyesore that should be turned into an asset. With K oper office space, the ilding could be used for social services. Extensions of County and State services may be put in the facility," he concluded.
Fox Hits Rival On Spending
COURT HOUSE - Contradicting a districtwide mandate for more economy in government, Rep. William J. Hughes is "satisfied” with the rate at which Congress spends money, according to Republican congressional candidate Beech Fox. The National Taxpayers Union’s survey of members’ votes in the 966h Congress reports that Hughes is just above the "big spender" label among Congressmen, Fox said. NTU ANALYSTS report that Hughes' average voting score indicated that he "is satisfied with the current levels of government spending," Fox said.
Fox added that the Taxpayers’ Union lists Hughes among the 28 to 41 percent ranking of the House membership whose votes are "against the public demand calling for reduction of the overall
cost of government." FEDERAL EXPENDITURES for 1980 are expected to reach $580 billion, an increase of $86.3 billion over 1979 levels of spending, Fox notes.
