Opening Win Adds to Beautiful Day

Chamber Tourney October 8

by Tom Laffey CARNEY S POINT - On a day that's picked right out of the book for football, Lower Cape May Regional journeyed to St. James High here for a renewal of the Tigers' philosophy — hard hitting and defense. A mild breeze cools off the bright sunny afternoon as co-captains Joe Digilio, Tom McCann and Will Streaker leceive the option to kick-off — and the season is underway. A deep kick gives the Spartans the opening play on their 22 and they quickly add 15 yards on their first play with a run by halfback Joe Cassidy. ’ ON THIRD DOWN Henry Burton singlehandedly drives the Spartans back to their own 18, and the tone is set for the day. “Fourth and a mile” fires up the Capers to block St. James’s punt and get position on the opponents' 27. Quarterback Clark Lare hands off to Steve Carty on consecutive plays, and behind fine offensive line blocking he twice rips off 13 yds. taking the ball to the Spartans’ one-yard line. Halfback Mark Lare completes the Lare connection and bursts in for

theTD.

At 4:37 of the first period, Scott Hiller adds the extra point on a kick that seems to travel 50 yds. right between the uprights. THE SPARTANS again receive the kick-off with exceptionally hard hitting by the special teams, and slowly drive to their 45 with athirdands. The fired up Caper defense just blows off sjdes and St. James has first and 10 at mid-field. On the next play the DiGilio-Streaker crush drives the Spartans

KICKING UP the dirt comes easy on a bone dry athletic field, especially in the extra heat of practice for the opening game. In this case. It’s a dry run by the Lower Cape May Regional varsity for their Sept. 27 opener at St. James. The Tigers play away three consecutive Saturdays before their first home game against Ocean City Oct. 18.

back to their 40 for a 10 yd. loss and as the quarter closes. St. James, using their best plays for the quarter openings, has QB Rich Gatanis pass 23 yds. to end Henry Engel for a first down at the Caper 37. TWO STALLED plays and again the crush heats , up. This time McGann and 1 Digilio level the line and drive the Spartans back to mid-field. The teams give and take until Mike Craig receives a punt on his own 30, and the lanes are open. Oops! A slip and it'd first and 10 on the 30. The very next play slows the Capers down for the rest of the game: Halfback Joe Gilmartin take a pit chout from Ray Obst and scampers 19 yds. after a crushing block by junior

Mark Lare. The block causes Lare a severely twisted ankle and he is lost for the rest of the game. BANGING HEADS and penalties bring the Tigers to St. James' 25 with :57 left on the clock. Hiller again drives the field goal through for a 10-0 margin. The second half brings hitting that cracks through the stands, and St. James on the move with the ball. A beautiful pass from Gatanis to Cassidy gives the host first down on the 18; two plays later they break in to score. The missed extra point makes it 10-6. Scatback Chris Francis is back to receive and crashes through the defenders for 18 tough yards on the return. MORE HARD hitting until the final Caper crunch stalls off St. James with a fumble recovery by Tiger Carl Robertson, an acrobatic tipped pass block by unacrobatic-looking (but always around the ball) Will Streaker and a

last play interception by Tom Blrchall. Tiger mascot Randy Clark is the hit of the fourth quarter with his BoomBoom Strip. Coach Bill Garrison's reflection of not having any stars is evident in the season-opener as he gets star performances from the whole squad. Next week is away with the Blue Devils of Hammonton — the Tigers’ first league game of the 1980 season. Tom Laffey, a football parent, is president of the Lower Cape May Regional Football Parents Booster Assn.
