Most Seen For Land Purchase

bv M'FUen Rowland AVALON - Response to two polls on the controversial proposal to purchase just under 3 acres of back bay land at a cost of $2.35 million indicates the overwhelming majority of local taxpayers support the acodsition oy the borough. The mail poll by Mayor Ellsworth Armacost showed a response as of Sept 28 of 1,996 for and 1,233 Against acquisition of the parcel, bounded by Cst St. and the Bay and including Alboatslips. THE POLL by the Avalon Homeowners Assn, revealed a response of 479

last riparian rights in the

lorough Council advanced the proposal several weeks ago as a method of keeping a prime piece of real estate out of condomonium townhouse development while at the same time providing for a marina-oriented park in an open space setting, with the rental of the boat slips providing revenue to offset acquisition and maintenance expenses. The area is said to include the

THE LATEST poll results were reported during the Sept. 26 public hearing on the matter, about three-quarters of 2Vfr hour council meeting was devoted to the continuing discussion. Debate at times was acrimonious. Council was scheduled to decide finally on the issue at its next regular meeting. However, affirmative action cannot be taken until after the state Local Finance Board approves the spending proposal. Since favorable word from Trenton is a prerequisite, municipal action will be delayed accordingly. Indications are that Council will approve the purchase. AT THE SEPT. 26 meeting, Judith Phillips of 197-25th St. expressed the view favoring open area for herself, her grandchildren and their children; while Chuck Ballinger of 35 W. Tenth St. said he wanted Avalon to maintain its image. It seems likely they will get their way.

MacDdnald Advocates One ZIP, Growth Plan

LOWER TOWNSHIP - Everyone must be urged to work for a single ZIP code for Lower Township, according to James MacDonald, Republican candidate for Township Committee. He said he helped start the move for a united ZIP code when he was a leader in the Township Chamber of Commerce several years ago. "This is a part of my platform that calls for a projected growth plan. I am sure this will help in our applications for federal funding. Lower Township, being Cape May County’s largest municipality, is falling far short of the amount of aid we should get,” he asserted. "WE NEED A concentrated effort to show the amount of area and people Lower Township represents,” he continued. "I believe we should take a look at our location as a major factor toward future clean, light industrial growth. We have the airport, ferry and parkway as easy accen to our sret, and we should help promote our

location,” the Cold Spring architect maintains. "Our bay and ocean are major resource* that have to be kept clean and preserved,” MacDonald added. We must encourage the expansion of our commercial fishing industry.” TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT must encourage federal and state aid for the fishing industry, he said, noting the local commercial fishing industry is one of the largest on the East Coast and should be given as much support as possible." Local government should also help and support the farming community, he said. "We should encourage the farmers to preserve their large farm tract, but also give them the option of subdivision for their future needs.” The Republican contender concluded his news release by stating, "A definite growth plan should be adopted to take into consideration all our needs and a realistic way to meet them."
