Fisheries *- Legislation (From Page 1) this project could create more than 100 new jobs in Cape May County and help revitalize the local fishing industry. In addition', he pointed out that the National bct&anic .and Atmospheric Administration recently approved a grant to Lund’s Fisheries of Cape May, for a demonstration project to evaluate onboard processing and packaging of underutilized ’ fish species off the Mid-Atlantic coast. "ALL OF THESE efforts are part of our comprehensive plan to promote the commercial fishing industry in South Jersey and across the country,"Hughes

said.

"This legislation will provide individual fishermen with some badly needed assistance to help pay for and maintain their vessels, In addition, it calls for foreign fishing in U.S. waters to be phased out over the next (ew years, so our industry can gain full use of fish resources in American waters. This program and others established under the bill should be very beneficial to the commercial fishing industry in the long run," he said. lllir.llES SAID the legislation, known as the American Fisheries Promotion Act, could potentially create as many as 40,000 new jobs, and contribute $1 billion annually to the national economy. To help commercial fishermen cope with the current economic problems, the bill provides for low-interest loans to fishermen who are in danger of defaulting on their boat mortgage payments. FROM A IX)NG-RANGE standpoint, the legislation would set up a loan guarantee program and tax deferral benefits for fish processing plants and other shoreside facilities. In addition, it would promote the harvesting of underutilized species such as squid, which show great promise for overseas markets. It would also promote substantially greater research and development in the fishing industry, including projects focusing on fuel efficiency and fish inspection standards. A Long History Of Achievement In Boat Racing Autumn quietude has descended on The Yacht Club of Stone Harbor, but it is a beehive of acUvity in the summer. In 1956 Wavne Dilkr was International Comet Champion. THE CLUB HAS HOSTED yachtmen from many lands, and its annual Gold Cup Power Boat Regatta (from 1929 to 1941) won naUonalrecogniton. „ . , While the Risleys were Busy developing Stone Harbor it was inevitable that a yacht club would take shape, and tl« seeds were sown in 1909. It 1910 construcUon was begun by John larsen (who was the father of Mre. Gladys Letxkus), and by the summer of 1911 Stone Harbor Yacht Club was rarin'togo. FOR INSTANCE. July of that year listed the first day as having South Jersey Racing AssociaUons competing in sailing, with a ball in the evening. On July 3 following dedication ceremonies of the 96th St. bridge, there was a water carnival and anotherJball, and on the 4th a regatta and another ball for visiting athletes and yachtmen! When World War f struck, the clubhouse was closed and remained boarded up until 1929. Then a group of local and not-so-local sea-lovers got to work and reorganized as The Yacht Club of Stone Harbor. DUTCH LETZKUS was one of the most diligent workers in restoring the club and has had many willing helpers. When I visited Dr. Harold Evans and his wife Panline the other day, they related how the members cleaned and painted and fixed the upsUirs rooms for rental to provide added revenue ($4 single, $6 double in the 40i). And can you believe that in those years one could order a fullcourse dinner for $1.50? .. . DR. AND MRS. EVANS fell in love with Stone Harbor many years ago and i* 1936 built a home for summer enjoyment; they are full-time residents since 1967. Dr. Evanswas head of the Dental Dept, of Went Jersey Hospital in Camden prior to his chief emeritus. He was Commodore of YCSH to 1942-43 and in preceding years Rear Commodore and a Flag °*ir«identally, did you know that Jonathan Wright, a crew member of the AmericaCup Yacht Freedom, to a resident of Stone Harbor, and in 1970 won the North American GPU Championehlp to be named Tbe CoUe^tate Sailor at the Veer’"
