Sideline Shots By The Old Sport

The Old Sport is back after a fall vacation in God's Country, New England. He attended the 52nd reunion of his school class in Medford, Mass, and wound up on Cape Cod. He was glad to see that the Panthers got off to a good start by beating the Buena Chiefs and then watched them come to life and defeat Wildwood. But they'll have to watch those penalties, totaling over 100 yds., especially the holding and face mask, although some experts felt that the officials were oversea lous in their duties. The Wildwood facilities can't compare with those at Memorial Field. There was no announcer on the PA system. It seems the former announcer retired and 'ook his equipment with him. The opening kick-off was held up when the referee couldn't get his whistle to blow! There was the usual dog-on-the-field incident, holding up the game for a few moments. The Panther Marching Band, under Ihe direction of svelt Dick Ludwig, gave its usual impeccable performance despite the muddy field. Kudos to them. Co-drum majors are Mary Norburv and Doug Pethman. It's the start of good things for the band Dick Ludwig says it's the biggest band he's ever had at Middle Twp. So we look forward to the coming year with interest. K . . A freshman football program is functionimg despite the lack of support from the school board. John Kaighn is coaching the team with the help of Eddie Leighton, former varsity tackle who is ineligible on a technicality., The Flag Football Game between the Republicans and the Democrats wasn't, played due to the absence of the Old Sport. Wifi try to arrange this for an upcoming home game.

At long last the Old Sport wishes to make up for an oversight to the honors by Coach Chock Dougherty'sbaseball team last spring. In the confusion of school closing no credit was giyen to the six members of the Panther ball team who were recognized for being the best at their position in

Cape May County. ,THEY WERE: Neal Chase and John Collins (P) Pickering (SS) Dan Arenberg (OF.) Neal Chase was also picked as designated hitter. And the “Old Chuckaroo" was selected as leading coach in the county . Wonder why he didn't win the CAL if he was so good and had six outstanding players? Did the coach make the ordinary players better or did they excel in spite of his coaching? Ken Johnson was selected on Ihe second team and Rick Stout received honorable mention. • • • ANOTHER OVERLOOKED sport has been long distance running. Kate Tyrne, daughter of R< ggle Byrne. Middle Iwp. teacher, finished first in the Sea Isle City AllWomen, All-Age category. She has become the No. 1 female distance runner in this area. Kate, who lives on Winding Way and ran on Carl Baker's girls track team also belongs to the Runaways of Ocean City, a running club and finished 10th in the Ocean City MiniMarathon. THE MIDDLE TWP. Little League Banquet was held recently at the VoTech Building and Willie Mays was the featured speaker. The committee was composed of Barbara Dempsey. Elaine Chase and Mrs. Don Richter, who did a tremendous job in feeding the large turnout. Seated at the Head table with Willie Mays were Mr. and Mrs. John O'Dea. Mr. and Mrs. Marty Tyndall. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dempsey, Keith Maund. Elaine Chase, Greg Arnold and wife, Peg and Rev. and Mrs. Wilbur Hoffman of the Methodist Church in Court House. • • • THE MIDDLE Twp. Knights Midget and PeeWee teams played games with PAL teams from Oaklane, Phila. Sunday at Memorial Field. The PeeWees won their game 34-28 under the coaching of Bob Hentges but the Midgets went down to defeat 25-2 at the hands of a bigger, more experienced team. The teams opened their league season. Billy Adams coaches the Midgets and Herb Mossbrooks tutors the Bob Cats. »
