7-6 Over Blue Devils
For Tigers, the March is On
by Tom La ffey HAMMONTON - The Caper Tigers arrive here last Saturday for the first league contest for both teams. For both it means either the beginning of a march to C. A.L. ranking or a season of trying to catch up with the pack. The visitors march home! The Tigers kick off with a strong wind behind them. The Blue Devils begin their drive downfield with good running by Brian Beebe inside and Herb Storey storming around the outside. Hammonton, chewing up six minutes, advances to the Capers 32. Junior Ray Obst sustains a leg injury and is assisted to. the sidelines. With a patched up backfield and strong line work, the Capers manage to stop the Devils at the 28 and the Tigers take over. Three plays net 9 yds. and on fourth and one quarterback Clark Lare takes the sneak giving the Tigers first down with 3:00 in the period. HAMMONTON TIGHTENS. Lare is forced to punt. He booms it 70 yds. into the end-zone and the Devils take over. The quarter ends. It looks as though the game will go to the best defense, as punts are exchanged and the Tigers come up again at fourth down needing just inches. Lare freezes the defense, which is expecting the sneak, and Tom McGann takes the handoff, powering through for 10 big yards. The Caper offense stalls again and the Devils take the punt at their 25. The Caper defense responds with gang tackling led by big Joe Oigilio. Hammonton's power runner, Beebe, can go nowhere, and Fran Sullivan drives them back another 3 yds. NOT TO BE outdone. Beebe (also the kicker and punter), drives a punt, with the wind to his back, for what must be a record 79 yds. A midfield illegal block gives the Devils the ball back at their 37. A pass to Beebe gains 20 from quarterback Joe Salvatore.
Stor«y runs 13 and the Devils have a first in Caper territory at the 40-yd. line. Salvatore drills a pass to end Tony Scota but the ball bounces off his chest and is caught by Harry Hadulian. The circus reception gives Hammonton a 1st at the 19 with 2:04 in the half. Beebe knocks off 4 Storey zips past for 9 and the Devils have a momentum. Two plays later Beebe crashes over for theT.D. The extra point fails. The score is 6-0 with :25 mt. The half ends and the two band begin performing what some fans say is the best music and drill in recent memory. BEEBE KICKS off to Mike Craig to start the second half. The offenses stall again and the teams spend most of the quarter punting despite fine runs by Joe Gilmartin, Steve Carty and McGann. The fourth quarter is passing as Hammonton appears on the move again. With 9:00 left the Devils are on the Caper 20 with first down. The Tigers hold and sack Salvatore. Along with a penalty for grounding the ball, it’s fourth and 30 at the 40-yd. line. Beebe punts and the Capers take over on their 11. Eighty-nine yards look even further with time flying. Carty picks up a tough 3. Lare rolls right. Nothing. Reverses field. More Devils. He ducks under the defense and spots Henry Burton down field. A perfect pass and reception make it first down at the 42. CARTY RIPS OFF 16 and the fired up offense is making their own breaks. Carty is stopped at the line and McGann powers for 6. Lare takes the option for 7; again for 6. A missed pass to Burton brings second and 10 from the 22. Mike Craig goes outside and follows the blocking to the 1-yd. line. No one is sitting in the stands. Lare sneakes through for the T.D. Kicker Scott Hiller adds the extra point (to remain perfect on all attempts) and it's 7-6Capers! Barry Gilbert arrives at

the same time as the kickoff ball and decks Hammonton on the 27. Willie Johnson breaks through for a sack of 4, and there's steam coming from the defense. The Devils refuse to qqit as Scola takes a pass at midfield, turns against the grain and sees open territory. Sophomore Bob Bonner ankle tackles him stopping a sure score. But it's still first down. Craig bats away another pass, Beebe hits the line strong and the ball is fumbled. Will Streaker recovers and the Capers hav? the ball back at their 48 with 1:25 left. THREE PLAYS trying to run out the clock nets the Capers fourth and 15. They punt. The Devils come right back at :29, ripping off 36 yds. The Tigers persist and time runs out, and it’s two consecutive (on the road) viqfbries. Line coach Bill Porter, gliding across the field on a cloud, beams as he's caught up in the emotion.
‘‘Character, ' he says. "Character is what these fine young athletes have developed." He continues: "At half time coach Bill Garrison told them to rely on that«*Stick with our game plan, to run at them, and that character will keep you in there." For the first time since... the Capers are 2-0 and face undefeated Middle Township this Saturday: Two excellent teams with fine coaching staffs backed up by great fans. .
