Sprinkle To Ward Off Frost thru Ijirry NrwboM The first frost in the fall spells the end to many warm weather crops, such as beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The most aggravating aspect of losing so many vegetables ts that the frost often oc curs just one night and after that there may be three weeks to a month of beautiful Indian summer weather The problem, then, is to get the frost-serisilive crops to survive the low temperature of that one night The severity of Irost damage depends both on I temperature and time 1 IN OTHER WORDS, two hours of 32 F temperature will probably demolish most frost-sensitive vegetable crops < Covering plants with baskets or newspapers may do the job. hut the little under stood method of sprinkling the garden with water can • provide better protection. Overhead sprinkling can protect u crop from frost When the foliage, blossoms or fruits of vegetables are coated with water and the temperature drops below 32 K.. the film of water turns to 'ice. When this happens, enough heat is released to maintain a 32 F. temperature between water and the newly forming ice. IK WATER is supplied as last as it is being fro7.cn to ice, frost protection will continue because the plant absorbs some of the heat that is being generated. Most plant tissues will not freeze at 32 F . and some hardy crops such as cabbage may not freeze until the temperature reaches 25 F. The coating of ice will not damage the plant unless it becomes so heavy that it breaks off branches or fruits. GARDENERS WHO plan to check the air temperature when frost threatens should be sure that the thermometer is located down at tfi level of the plants. Most official . weather reports are based on thermometers located at approximately eye level, but the temperature close to thejground often is two to five degrees lower Larry E Newhnld is County Agricultural Agent.
