Interview with Beech Fox

(From Pagel) Congress to tax the private sector and then make decisions on how to redistribute the wealth—that everything would be fine. But finally the time has come when we re starting now to have to pay the piper and, suddenly, people are realizing that there s no way that it’s a good idea for Democrats in their reputation and fact of tax and spend and regulate-there's no way that that is a good system... Suddenly there is a realization that the Democrats and Democrat Congresses have brought this nation practically to the brink of financial chaos or destruction thru those policies... My | " where from 4 A quarter-century of Democrats have spelled financial disaster for this country, and the people are starting to realize this. Congressman Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.) has » "The real enemy is my own Republican Party. We’re the ones who have said to the people. Don’t come to our table for dinner. All we’re going to do is tighten your belt.’’’ Do you think Mr. Kemp may have had in mind something like your advocacy of temporarily lowering the minimum wage • 'n the hiring of unskilled young people? No. what Jack Kemp-and I r ve had several conversations with him-was referring to was the stereotype, old Hoover policies of past eras where the Republicans, in trying to stem the Ude of Democrat spending, would, in order to keep inflation down, take those tighten-your-belt steps that would cause unemployment. And he (Kemp) is saying now that we realize in order to stop inflation, to increase unemployment or recession is wrong, we have now realized that to go a new direction, for growth and produc-

Recession means high unemployment rates. High unemployment rates obviously

mean people need jobs.

The way to work, the way to get yourself out of inflation and recession—which are two completely, entirely different problems—is to do exactly as we’ve talked about before: Get the government out of

the way of the private sectof.

Allow them (private sector) to restore the incentive for productivity and growth from the wage earner thru the businessman so that we can expand the economic pie and the economic potential of this country, and provide enough money for legitimate govemmeht services. There’s no problem with people paying

reasonable taxes. ,

The idea is to allow the people the ability to generate the funds to pay those taxes to

provide those services...

Recession is nothing more than the result of government taking away the incentive for growth in the private sector.

What a wrong with matching them up for a temporary period of time, to provide incentives for both, so that the unemployed young person will not be taken advantage of or will not be used as a gimmick; but will be able to be exposed to skills In the E vate sector. That's better than raking ves and painting street curbs tem-

Expose them to skills in the private sector so then he will start to become qualified, and can show some potential and have some inner mix. And let them work at a reasonable reduced minimum wage, so that he starts to become part of the mainstream and starts to understand and to realize what it means to have the dignity of working out of the dole and starting te

There’s no incentive for people in small business anymore. And those that are in it, are frustrated and have no reason to grow. And without that growth, sure you’ll have recession, sure you have unemployment-

you’ve got 8 million of them.

And with Carter and Hughes agreeing to those kind of policies —and they have and it’s in the record: Mr. Hughes has voted just under 70 per cent of the time with Mr. Carter's policies in almost four years... You want to talk specifically about the minimum wage: I’ve addressed that in the context, and I repeat it, that this country is full of unskilled, especially young people and, more especially, the black youths,

statistically speaking...

If the small businessman needs semiskilled and he’s willing to train somebody-he's willing to expose them to the private sector-then he r * 1

won t happen, though, and what we have to stress here-and I can’t think of a way |o be more vivid and profound about

this whole campaign:

Certainly, I want to see a Republican President. I think we need the symbolic leadership to bring our platform and our

policies to the force...

But, in spite of what I just said, this country will never solve its economic K &blems, will rxjver get away from the d habits we’ve had for a quarter of a century, unless we change our House of Congress from the present policymakers. For example, if Mr. Reagan wins—and he will win- to elect Bill Hughes or any other Democrat behind a Reagan victory is like canceling your original vote to change the direction of this country Because what will Bill Hughes, what will any Democrat congressman, what will the Democrat Congress do to support the Republican policies in the form of Mr Reagan? They’ll do nothing. They'll keep the same bad habits they've always had. So. there's the crucial question more than anything else. This nation has got to / realize that we’re never going to change the direction of this country or solve our problems with the Democrat Congress, including Mr. Hughes who has been a big

part of it. *

In stressing team play, does that mean you would automatically vote along party

lines?

No. I don’t think anybody that has the need, the requirement and the desire to represent people should ever say, or ever believe inside, that he’s going to automatically vote along party lines. . .' I would vote, I think, primarily along party lines most of the time because I aprte with our philosophy and our direction. But I would never say I’ll ever vote totally with anybody or any party or any group of any kind I won't do that. What’s the biggest problem facing South Jersey, and is the challenge being met adequately? The biggest problem facing South Jersey, in terms of the Congressional race-and I can’t stress this enough: To get people to stop and please think and analyze for a few minutes where the Democrat Congresses have brought this nation on the major federal issues that have impacted against us in the past, economically and otherwise including defense, where they are impacting against us today. Now, the problem is, people tend to think parochially, and I understand thal People tend to look at their representative and say, ’Boy, he's done this here or he's done that here locally.’ ...There’s nothing wrong with that.

‘My problem and job is to explain...where Carter and Hughes are coming from. ’
