County Library Has Come Long Way in 55 Years Tired of looking at the same old pictures on the wall? Cape May County Library system has 1,000 framed art prints that you can borrow to beat the boredom. And why strain your precious eyes on narrow-margin, close-print paperbacks when you can read for free one of its 215,000 volumes? Also within your reach are phonograph records, films and pamphlets on any subject you can name. Library service in our county has progressed in 59years from 2,000 volumes housed in a tiny building on Mechanic Street rented from Horace Richardson for 8350 a year, including heat and water. Alfred Cooper was the first president of the Library Commission, and well remembered is Miss Sara Thomas, the lone librarian during the 30a. Now there are four branches, with a fifth in Lower Township in the making, l-aara Pastre is in charge at Avalon, Paty Pitts at Stone Harbor, Cora Piro at Sea Isle City, and Robert Giddis mans the bookmobile. Thomas Tennant, county library director since 1979, joined the system in 1971 as reference librarian when quarters were established in the new county building. Rl.slK UNKI.E. in charge of technical services, joined in 1900 and has the longest full-time employment record. She is assisted by Mary Carter. Catherine ScheM and Mary O’Brien. Marge Maglee handles \Je overdue books, FVadell McCullough the periodicals, and Andrew Martin Ihe circulation. In charge of book processing is llsiu-Hsiang; Susan Taylor manages inter-library loans, and Margaret Vdamski. extension services. The children’s librarian is Beatricr Konnwltch; Angela Plagge works with young adults. Staffing the reference room is Melora Davis, assisted by I^eonard Szymanski. Oorothv Kittner is in charge of personnel, Linda Brigham does the film ordering, and Nancy Undholm is consultant for schools. Barhar Crossan is Leonard's secretary and also takes care of book ordering. "Man ning" the main desk are Debra Devitt, Christine Sebastian. Carol Kennan. Debra Milita, Virginia Snjsler. Bridget Saraceo and Virginia Cotter, laicille Buddy drives the library van, Charles Davis is security guard, and Paul Reynolds is the maintenance man. An impressive roster, don’t you agree? So supoort your local library. It has something for everyone to enjoy. Cubs to Party On Halloween Theme Thurs.
