laws are causing a serious unemployment rate among young Americans, according to Beech Fox. who is challenging Rep. William Huges for the 2nd District Congressional
seat.
"These recessionary times are difficult for adult workers." Fox says, "but they are devastating to young people who come out of school only to be disappointed in the job market." Til F FEDERAL BUREAU of Labor Statistics predicts that a large part of the jobless rate anticipated by the end of the year will be made up of young people, black and white. Fox reports. According to the Bureau, Fox continued, the loss of 700,000 jobs for workers in the 16-21 year-old range sent youth unemployment soaring to 16.4 per cent in
July.
"THESE YOUNG people are more than just cold statistics," Fos contends "In their hands rests the future of the nation s industry and commerce in the years to come.” According to Fox. Rep. William Hughes has "denied South Jersey youngsters an opportunity to get at least a start in the shrinking job market. Fox cited a 1977 bill that was rejected in Congress by one
vote.
HUGES SUPPORTED President Carter by voting "No" on a House bill that would permit employers to pay 85 per cent of the minimum wage to workers under age 18 for their first six months on the job. Fox stated. "These inflationary times make it difficult for many small businesses to hire a youngster at the existing minimum wage. "We can provide jobs for young people at a temporarily lower minimum wage, giving them the chance to learn useful skills and contribute to society, or we can offer no jobs to any youngsters at the current high minimum wage." he concluded Dance Classes SEA ISLE CITY - Free weekly dance classes for men and women will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 15 in the city community center.
