Nearly a decade ago, Stain’s Ttie Sweet had a string of chart-topping singles that were quite enjoyable. True, they had their critics, but for aggressive bubblegum pop. no one could match their intensity. Then, something happened, Sweet lost their flash and glamor and became •‘serious” about their craft. “VI” (Capitol) is another mediocre record for The Sweet. The songwriUng is uneven, the performances iBusally uninspired, and overall the feeling is rather dated. Whereas before, The Sweet could be counted on delivering some catchy melodies, nowadays there are bits and pieces that are interesUng and nothing more, Pick up their singles • and skip the record. ANDY FAIRWEATIIER Low has been crooning his offbeat, boozy tunes for close to 15 years and he hasn’t even come close to a hit on our shores. But, he has a rabid cult following that allow him to continue CAMPEX ’80 Scheduled For Scouts VINELAND — Over 2,000 Boy Scouts and their leaders will be camping at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds, near CarmAl, for CAMPEX ’80 next weekend, Oct. 17, 18, and 19. recording and one day his joyous music will find a homd on our airwaves. •Mega-Shebang” (A&M) isn’t as easy to get into as his previous albums, but after a few spins, Low’s loose approach to singing will win over any skeptic. Mink DcVille. led by Willie DeVille, have finally released the album one felt they were capable of but couldn't quite pull off the first two times around. "Le Chat Bleu" (Capitol) is a nice blend between rockers and slow ballads - something Willy DeVille can sing better than anyone else alive. For fans of R4B in the tradition of Otis Rrddlne or Wilson Pickett Mink DeVille should be checked out. Due out any day on our shores, but already out in England, is the second effort by England's ska influenced Madness. Not as loony as their debut, Madness, nevertheless, has a record that is not only an improvement over their fine debut, but also a longplayer that’s sure to be one of the year’s finest pop releases. Madness’ •‘Absolutely” (StiffImport) shows a bit more depth, as the group takes on other influences, such as rockabilly and R&B, yet doesn’t forsake the ska foundation which they set for themselves the first time around.
