COURT HOUSE — A showdown of two unbeaten teams brings an overflowing crowd to host Middle Township High School. Visiting Lower Cape May Regional High School comes with a 2-0 record and a stingy defense to face the high scoring Panthers. With Scott Hiller kicking off to Middle’s Jeff Tomlin the anticipation quickly turns to attention as Dan Arenberg comes out throwing with a 17-yard pass to Mark Garcia for a first down at mid-field. The Caper defense responds and on fourth down the Panthers punt to drive the Tigers deep in their own territory. A CAPER holding penalty gives Middle Hie ball right back on the 26. Three passes and a defensive holding penalty quickly give the Panthers another first down. Joe DiGiliostops the offense momentarily with a four yard loss. Again Middle goes to the air and Clark bare leaps to the ball and comes up with the interception at the 12. Three pla'ys and a quick kick, push the Panthers back to their 37. Mark Garcif takes a handoff and hits for 6. Pass time again as Arenberg spots Bob King open for a gain of 35 and the Panthers are moving at will. A NICE FAKE pass and hand-off to Garcia and the Panthers are on the 7 and knocking on the door. Again, Garcia carries for 6 and it’s fourth and one from only inches out. Tom Tice plows over center and the extra point gives Middle a 7Olead. Art Cannon’s kick-off puts the Capers on the 23. Joe Gilmartin takes the hand-off from quarterback bare and hits for six. The ball is fumbled and the Panthers recover at the 30. Garda is called on again and ripe off 20 yards. Garcia again for 6. bare almost steals another one and it’s fourth and goal. That Caper defense holds tight and gets the ball at the 4. MIKE CRAIG takes a flare pass and breaks the Tigers out to their 20. Steve Carty hits the line for 5 and Craig nine for the first down. The defenses are controlling the game and force a Caper punt. Four plays later It’a the Panther’s turn. The punt is blocked and Will Streaker comes up with the ball and rumbles to the 43. A face masking penaltv adds 15 more and the Capers have new life at the 28. Off-sides makes it first and 15. bare drops to pass, pumps right, the whole defense responds, and he fires to the left and Henry Burton for an 18-yard gain, bare takes the option left for 6, Gilmartin for 1, Tom McGaim hits for 2 and its 4th and goal from the 6. bare fakes left and follows the right side of the line into the end-zone. Hiller ties 117-7.
TOMLIN TAKES the kick-off to the 35, where Barry Gilbert stops him. Chris Nichols takes a pass into Caper territory at the 47 and Garcia follows wilh a pass for 7 and a handoff to the 30. Bob King receives for 12. Garcia another 9 and the Panthers are in high gear. TTie Capers’ double coverage of Joe Donahue can’t stop the T.D. as he takes a perfect pass. No extra point and it’s 13-7 as the half closes down. Craig receives to start the second half and brings the ball to the 40. Some strong running and blocking sends the Tigers to the Middle 2f. Craig’s reception and outstanding blocking by Charles Jasperse and Streaker make it goal from the9. • FOUR PLAYS later Carty takes a pitchout and storms over standing up. Hiller adds the point after, the score is 14-13 Capers, and the entire mood of the game changes. The lead Inspires the defense as they come out hitting and gang tackling. The Panthers advance but pay heavily as time passes to the fourth quarter. .Special team tackling by Scott Lewis, TSrry Randolph and Ed Sherretta add to the punishment. DiGilio is followed everywhere by Terry Dalton, McGann and Fran Sullivan are constantly after Arenberg and the Panther backfield. KING IS waiting for a pass and Craig slams him at the same time for the "hit of the game’’. Arenberg passes again from his 24. Chris Simonsen intercepts and runs it to the 30. bare lofts a perfect pass on first down to Burton for the score and Hiller misses (but mighty close from here) for the first time this season. It’s 20-13 and the bounce is out of the Panthers. MIDDLE comes out throwing and three plays later Craig comes up with another interception with 3 minutes left on the clock. Trying to run out the time brings penalties and a first and 20. Two runs add 12 yards and eats up one minute. The Capers line up for a field goal, change their mind and decide to make the Panthers take over on downs with no time outs left. Arenberg must go up and the Tigers stop them again with another interception by Streaker as the game came to a close. THE CAPER FANS stormed the field to congratulate their heroes for a school record 3-0 and a first place tie in the Cal. The ride back to Lower territory continued with celebrating and probably long into the night. Coach Bill Garrison can finally believe in hb coaching staff and his team. Next week has Ocean City Hhme for the Capers and the Panthers travel to St. Joe’s. Cape May County is where the league is looking this year and certainly the title will come this way.
