This week, the freshman and sophomore runners of Lower Cape May were scheduled to face the first and second year harriers from the other Cape May County schools on Monday, while the vanity travels for a return match against Pleasantville on Friday. The first frost was forecast for this week, and you can notice each day that the air has a slight chill in it. but it sure hasn’t affected the fishing-when the wind didn’t blow so hard that you couldn’t get
out.
Some signs are becoming evident that the season is winding down, as a lot of the weekend crowds haven’t been showing up, but Cpt. Jim Solly on the Fiesta announced last week that he will be run-' ning half day parties until Nov. 2, leaving Cape Island’s West Basin at 8 a.m.and 1 p.m. each day. LAST WEEK on Thursday Capt. Jim had a nice catch, on his morning run, of good ‘size weakfish drifting on the offshore edge of the 60’ slough in the Bay. On Sunday Carl Unger came over from New Gastle, Del. and he and BUI Halbruner and I took the Janie TV 11 out to fish the Bay. As we left the canal the water was pretty sloppy, so we decided to try the standpipe range off North Cape May. Bill Halbruner threw the anchor, but after an hour’s fishing we had only three weakfish, so we decided to go offshore where a big batch of boats was fishing. AS WE ENTERED the group we passed Capt. Bob Schumann on the Ijniy Grace anchored up. so we split^ the difference and threw our anchor about midway between them. We had just about settled back on our anchor line when Carl Unger put a nice size weakieintheboat. It wasn’t long after that that Bill Halbruner caught another one, and then I caught a spot (Cape May Goodie) which we saved for bait. Hie action kept on going, and on one round of catches Carl came up with a croaker, and I caught a black bass. THE FISHING in this location lasted for a good hour, and on one of the last catches I got a 5-pound weakfish, which was one of the best I’ve caught in 3 trips. Most of the boat fishermen are anchoring nowadays, because drifting doesn’t seem to do as well. When we decided we’s had enough we had 29 weakfish, 3 spots, a croaker, and a black bass for a good day of fishing. After we got back to the dock and cleaned our fish I took Carl, in my Land Rover, back by way of Len Guthrie's Cape Taxidermy shop, where I was to Pick up a 7 pound IS oz. weakfish mount Len Jade up for me. I caught this fish on May 9, the night Len caught his first drum, and I’d made up my mind that I had to have one of those big tiderunners mounted. • I’VE CAUGHT BIGGER weakies, but this fish was a long, slim beauty- that seemed just right for mounting; sod it came out beautiful. Len has a certain way of shaping a mount that puts Urn in a class all by himself . He did s special job for me on this one
showing the gills, tongue, and the two top teeth that you just don’t get in an ordinary mount. He also shaped it with a left hand curve, so it looks like it’s swimming. I’ve got 15 mounts from all overFlorida. Toms River, Long Island, etc.,-and I can safely say this is the best looking mount I’ve got. It’s down in my office, and I’m very proud of it . WHILE WE WERE there Len also showed Carl some of the animal mounts he has done, and they, too, were outstanding. It takes a long time for a man to learn how to produce the quality Len Guthrie is coming up with, but I will state right here that if I’m lucky enough to get any more fish worth mounting Len Guthrie is going to do them. His shop speaks for itself. He’s so busy that he ,doesn’t know how toget the work done. Well, ttiat’s the fishing report for this week, and kabellr Hawkey told me Monday night that they were even catching bigger weakfish up in the deep water oyster stakes, and I
guess that’s where Mel “Rackv” Hearon was with Bin Hearon as they got 32 weakfish and several flounder earlier this week. Last minute item- The Inn Shark Fishing Club will have its annual dinner on Saturday. Nov. 1 at Billy Malllgan’s Inn in the Villas, and each member will get a lined Shark Club jacket. This has been a big shark season. I’ll be back with a report on the win-
CARL LINGER of New Castle, Del., is shown with two of the weakfish taken on the "Janie TVII" in the Bay last week.
