Dacia Ward STEVE CARTY rumbled thru the Red Raiders for Lower Cape May's first two touchdowns Saturday against Ocean City. Here, he shows his style against the Panther defense the previous week in Cour£ House.

The 4-0 Tiger ‘Believe’

by Tom Laffey ERMA - Lower Cape May Regional High School boon ted its record to 4-0 Saturday with an impressive 21-8 win over Ocean City in which the score didn’t indicate the Capers' control of the game From the opening kickoff, the Caper Tigers set the tempo of the game with the offensive line firing off the ball and driving the Raiders back at will. Led by All-League center Joe DiGiiio, linemates

Willie Johnson, Terry Dalton, Charles J as perse, Fran Sullivan, Barry Gilbert, Jeff Moison, Carl Robertson, Terry Randolph, and packed on the ends with Will Streaker and Henry Burton, the offensive unit had a field day springing the backfield into Raider territory. THE LINE’S DEPTH and prowess helped Steve Carty to a 128-yard rushing day and two touchdowns. Scott Hiller again was perfect nq p.A.T.’a with three and a kick-off that

was boomed into the endzone a la the Eagles' Tony

Franklin.

The Tiger defense wasn’t to be outdohe; interceptions and yards lost per Raider carry were the standard for the day. Bob Mentz’s two interceptions — one being only a step and juke away from being a score — and Clark Lane’s theft and run, which resulted in a Tiger T.D., were the highlights of a defense that had almost every player on the team seeing some action.

CRI8 SIMONSEN’S juggle-and-intercept-the-bail act set up a score deep in Raider territory. Special Team hitting and constant pressure found Mike Laffey coming up with a key fumble recovery to head off a Raider offense that came to play in the second half. Also punting for the Capers, La re’s kicks were all picture-perfect and rounded out an outstanding victory to keep the Tigers in contention' for C.A.L.

honors.

THE 1980 SLOGAN ill Caper Land of “We Believe” resounded through the crowd as the festive mood carried over the entire school grounds. A winning record and program brings along a feeling of what high school sports is supposed to be like — an athletic outlet and a spirit of togetherness. This coming Saturday bringi a show-down game with defending C.A.L. titleholder St. Joseph's coming to town for what will probably be the game to decide the IBeOchamps It promises to be standing room only.

When the wind blows hard Northwest for three days in a row after Labor Day it not only kills the fishing in the Bay and makes offshore fishfng uncomfortable, but it makes rriany fishermen look for something else to do. That’s exactly what happened this past week. There were still quite a few boats out on Saturday, the second day of the blow Ron Tompkins on the RonEll said he had 28 nice weakfish fishing right back of the breaking surf off Diamond Beach. He saw a lot of other fish caught there too. But on Sunday, with the wind still blowing Northwest, I couldn't find many boats out. I STOPPED BY the Fiesta just after Cpt. Jim Solly had backed her in, and his party had a nice catch of weakfish and flounder - Capt. Jim said they’s been anchored up close to shore off Diamond Beach, and the fish bit well, but there weren’t many boats there. Tony Vistenzo of Court House called me and told me of a surf blitz there that lasted over on hour as medium sized blues, along with some slammers drove the surf men into a frenzy. Tony said he cranked in fish till he got tired, and everyone on the beach had bluefish. HE HAD REALLY called to tell me of the tragic death of Ed and Betty Wright from Avalon, who were killed in a tragic automobile accident as they were touring Scotland. This couple has helped us for five years put on our Cape May County - Hatteras Anglers Surf tournament, and- they will be sorely missed. October fishing could get very slow if the winds and coid continue, but there’s always a chance that Indian Summer will pay a Tigers Drop Couple Of

Matches

By David Weinberg The Lower Cape May girls's tennis team continued to struggle last week as they dropped two close matches to Sacred Heart and Ofean City by identical 3-2 scores. In the Sacred Heart match, two singles players captured victories for the Capers. Number one singles player Val Cullen defeated the Heart’s Danielle Rruni, 6-4, 6-2. Number three singles player Elizabeth Kelly also won, defeating Terry Bencle, 6-0,6-1. THE SAME TWO players captured victories in the Ocean City match. Cullen trounced the Raider's Elma Godoy, 6-2,6-2. Kelly won her second match of the week by beating Sharon Seltzer, 6-2,6-2. This week, the Tigers had three home matches scheduled against Mainland on Monday, Wildwood yesterday, and Bridgeton on Thursday.

visit and bring the fishing back to normal. AT ANY RATE this kind of fishing breeds more jetty and surf fishing; and pretty soon it will be time to try for those stripers down in the rips. I’ve heard of a 34 lb. striper being taken off the north Cold Spring jetty, but I haven’t been able to track down the fellow that caught it. Striper fishermen aren’t very talkative. As Indian summer started to make itself felt later in the week, I started to get some reports of weakfish catches in the bay again. ART LONG was in, and said he’d had a nice catch of weakfish inside of Bug Light, so maybe with the warm weather that has returned we might still see some good fishing. The Cape May County - Hatteras Anglers held their annual fail dinner down at the Winchester In Cape May Thursday night. 27 members and guests attended, and fishing tales of all kinds were exchanged. Four new members were inducted into the 23-year-old club that specializes in channel bass fishing on the outer banks of North Carolina, and Black Drum fishing here in the Delaware Bay. THE NEW members were: Charles Cantz and Neil Madvay of Pennsville. The . last two charter members, Jim Roach of Freehold, and I, agreed to take honorary lifetime memberships so that the club by-laws limiting the • membership to 25 could be

upheld. Jack Osborne, the new president, presided over the meeting and counted at least 14 members who plan to make the annual trek to Hatteras in search of channel Bass in November. Jack was also telling me that he had just returned from Bentbn Harbor, Mich, with his son Keenan; and that while there they tried their luck at fresh water fishing. Keenan, who is fast becoming a very experienced light tackle angler, caught a chinook salmon, and Jack captured a good-sized lake trout, **rhich got each of them a recognition citation. ONE LAST piece of news that isn’t too happy - I learned from my weekly copy of the Outer Banks Current that my old friend Ralph Gray of Hatteras, had passed on at the age of 79. Ralph was one of the first beach guides that I met bn my early trips to Hatteras, and he was one of those rare individuals that could read a beach and find where fish were biting in the surf. He taught me to use Cortland Cam-O-flage braided nylon for drum, and I’ve never fished with any other type of line when I could get it. He had a Model A ford that was famous all along the Hatteras beach, and he still ghve me some good tips whenever I was in Hatteras. Life goes on, but you realize as you grow older, how rich you were with these type of friends....
