by BQI Sherman COURT HOUSE-If the Middle Township High School Team* ever expect to win a League Championship, they had better get in a league without St. Joseph's of Mammon ton. Once again in a crucial game, Saturday the Panthers went down to defeat30-13. St. Joe’s passing ace Ralph D'Amerlio, had plenty of time to pick out a receiver downf ield. ON THE other hand Middle’s Danny Arenberg was so rushed that he had to unload the ball in a

hurry.

The Panthers grabbed an early lead when - after St. Joe’s had scored a Touchdown on a march from their own 20 yd line - they missed the point after. Then Middle scored on a 45-yd. run by Mark Garcia, and Jay Erkert kicked the extra point. ST. JOE’s scored again on a pass from D'Amelio to Fichetola. The conversion was good when D’Amelio ran it over. ^ The half ended with the score St. Joe's 14 - Middle 7. In the second half, St.

Joe’s scored again on a run by Samoyan. a pass from D’Amelio to Getty added two more points making the score 22-7. D’Amelio ran it in for a T.D. and a pass to Getty added two more points making it 30-7. MIDDLE SCORED another touchdown on a pass to Jeff Tomlin. The run for the extra points failed leaving the score 3013 - which it remained until the end of the game. After the game, Coach Phil Ex ley - who before the game said he had four men playing hurt - felt that his linemen had not performed to the best of their ability. PENALTIES AGAIN took their toll with the Panthers losing 110 yds. and once having a long run for a TJ). by Garcia being

nullified.

Mark Garcia rushed 10 times for a total gain of 132, Tice was 5 for 19, Tomlin 3 for 6 and fyichoh 2-17 while Arenberg hadlfor6yds. Middle's record is now22 with a couple of breathers coming up - next Saturday at St. Josephs of Tom’s River and following that, Pleasantville.

pifl ERMA - In the Cape May County cross country championships, host Lower Cape May turned in a very subpar performance, finishing a disappointing fourth behind Ocean City, Wildwood Catholic, and Wildwood high schools. Ocean City swept the first five places as Red Raider Dan Lowry won the meet in a thne of 16:23. For Lower Cape May, freshman Ed Lodlse captured team high honors with an 18th place finish. Brian Finnerty and Mark McPherson finished 20th and 22nd respectively. Duck Season Soon The South Zone and Coastal Zone for duck and coot hunting open November 1. Waterfowlers should refer to current State fish Game and Wildlife regulations for further details.

DwtaWart MARK GARCIA shows the form he used in going for a 43-yd. TD Saturday during Middle Township’s 13-30 defeat in Hum moo too at the hands of the St. Joe’s Wildcats. The Panther* are now 2-2. Hi is wasithe action the prior week against Lower Regional, which takes on St. Joseph's this Saturday. Both teams are 4-d.

K STRONG, the U.8. Coast Guard Regimental Runners race down Beach Dr. during Cape May’s Run For Preservation. A Tradition in Running

CAPE MAY - ’’Where’s the Coast Guard?” a man asked. "You’ll hear’em," a woman replied. "Usually you hear them before you see them.” The Coast Guard’s chanting "regimental ’ Runners" were a major attraction at the recent annual Run for Preservation, a benefit for the restoration of the historic Emlen Physick estate. A GROUP OF 85 recruits from the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center here, the Regimental Runners are almost as much as tradition as the run itself. This is the second year such a group has entered the race not necessarily to win, but to demonstrate a solidarity with the community and, at the same time, to improve the recruits' physical conditioning. Most of the Runners had never competed in a race before; most were not even "Weekend Joggers.” To prepare for completing the 5-mile course, the recruits underwent a sixweek training program, gradually increasing their time and mileage. Lt. (j.g.) Darrel Williams, First Battalion officer at the Training Center; Lt. Wayne Smith, USPHS, TRACEN’s physical therapist; and physical fitness instructor Seaman Dawn Parker were responsible for organizing and training the group. The three also accompanied the Regimental Runners in the race. YOU COULD, Indeed, hear them before you saw them. The recruits chanted
