Capers Roll on Toward Title

Page 27

ERMA — Steve Carty’s relentless running Monday personified the entire Caper Squad's effort as Cower Cape Mey Regional continued its best season ever with a 12-6 setback of defending CAL champions St. Joseph’s of Hammonton. Themnningback’s fourth quarter TD put the Tigers ahead ^6 for the first time in the make-up game. Saturday’s coastal storm rained out the originally scheduled contest. The tigers were as forceful on the field as the wind and tide had been two days earlier, with the Caper defense coming through once again when it mattered most. "The key was our goal line stand," Coach Bill Garrison noted afterward. The defense had held all afternoon; the offense spurting forward after the final quarter began, with Carty’s 25-yd. run to the end xone on a pitchout from

quarterback Clark La re. The magic toe of Scott Hiller added the PAT. Toward the end of the first half, it was Hiller who put the Tigers on the scoreboard with a school record, 3&-yd. field goal. St. Joe’s scored first just after the second quarter started when running back Gary Samoyan muscled his way into the end zone from the 3, following a 50-yd. drive. But it was near the end of the third quarter that the Caper defense became most unyielding, holding the Wildcats on the 2-yd. line and on the next play pushing them back. A Tiger fumble inside the five later in the last quarter gave St. Joe’s the ball on their own two and a chance to get back into the game. The Caper defense was unyielding, and on the second play pinned quarterback Ralph D’Amelio in the end rone —

but not before he intentionally tossed the ball down, in a grounding which added two points via the

referee. The outcome added another notch toward a hoped for first-ever EAL

title in a game between two previously unbeaten foes in which the victor came out on top 12-6 even though

scoring only one touchdown. On Saturday, Regional hosts Cape Henlopen here.
