The winds and tides have been playing havoc with the fishing I The only fishing news I’ve heard au week was from John Manganarao, of J.M. garage in Green Creek who witnessed a nice catch of weakfish off Reeds Beach

jetty.

This was on Sunday - John said they were pulling in 2 lb. weakfish, and he saw a fellow lose one that could have gone 8 lbs. I must confess that I really didn’t get much chance to get around the areas of fishing that I usually visit, because we all missed on the weather Sunday, and I spent Saturday night watching the Phillies lose to Kansas City. SUNDAY NIGHT was a different story, though, as those phantastic ball players won the last game in their series with the Royals; and then on Tuesday night when they came back to Veterans Stadium I stayed up and watched them clinch the World Series. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more exciting series of baseball games, and Tuesday topped them all. Now, I was a baseball player not big league - before I was a fisherman, and I lived this come-from-behing playing the Phillies have been doing clear back to when they were beating the Montreal Expo’s for their division title, then to the playoffs with the Huston Astros, and finally the clincher with the Kansas City Royals. I GOULD LIVE that last game through my television screen, and I must admit I though Dallas Green Was wrongl Imagine taking out a lefty like Steve Carlton who was pitching a shutout just because he gave up two hits, and putting in "Tug" McGraw, who had already worked too many innings in relief. But I’ve got to admit Dallas Green knew his players, and I think he must admit he must have had a lot of help from Bob Boone, the catcher because a good man behind the plate can spot when a pitcher is lasing his stuff. ONE THING that really won the last ball game, in my estimation, was when Pete Rose caught the pop foul that dribbled out df Bob Boone’s glove. I’vd heard of this type of play happening before, but I had never witnessed it it’s like a triple play • they're rare, and I’ve never seen one of

them.

I played baseball with a lot of good ballplayers, but

Boyd Tyler!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player that hustled more than Pete Rose. When he laid down that bunt in the middle of the game it,took me back 43 years when Coach Wilbur Clark used to teach us how to bunt. I haven’t seen many major leaguers who could bunt

like Pete did.

IN FACT, I guess I could parallel the Phillies feelings, too, because we were the only high school baseball team in Middle Township High that won two County championships in a row - and nobody believed we could do it

either.

Maybe that’s a comparison that is a little far fetched, but when you play all out to win and you succeed, you recognize the feeling and the relief in the player’s faces. Sometimes you play just as hard, and you don’t make it. BUT EVERYTHING was right for the Phillies for the first time in 50 years, and I’m glad for all of them. Now back on the fishing scene I understand there was a time Wednesday when boats fishing out by the offshore buoy at Cold Spring jetty ran into a big bunch of weakfish, but other than that I think fishing was pretty slow all Regional Harriers Drop Triple The Lower Cape May Cross Country Team saw their record drop recently to a disappointing 3-9 as they suffered a triple defeat at the hands of Wildwood, Saint Joeeph's, and Buena. Wildwood captured three victories as they defeated Lower Cape May 19-42. Buena defeated the Capers 24-35, while Saint Joseph's barely edged the Tigers 27-

32.

Freshman Ed Lodke captured top honors for the Capers as he ran to a ninth place finish In 17:41. Mark McPhearaan and Brian Flnnerty finished tenth and eleventh respectively for the Tigers. This week, the Capers doe out their regular season today, traveling to an away-meet in Ocean City.

over.

WITH THE full moon and flood tides this past week has been pretty sad, but we may still get some good fishing before winter sets

in.

Last minute item the weekend storm that hit us Saturday was a wild one. High tides and high winds knocked out any fishing. "Perc’* Douglass used to call this type of coastal blow a "tree trimming

storm"
