Hughes: What Is Record of GOP Foe?

OCEAN CITY - Congressman Bill Hughes has called upon his election year opponent to abandon his campaign of ‘negativism and criticism” and begin talking about his own record as a public official. •Tm proud of my record, my accomplishments, and the positive benefits I have been able to bring to all of South Jeiyey," Hughes said. ‘Tve worked hard, and gotten results. ••IN CONTRAST, my opponent has yet to point out even one thing he has done in 10 years as a county sheriff to make life a little bit better for the citizens of Cape May.” Hughes said. Instead. Hughes said, his Opponent has simply focused on about 10 of the some 5.000 votes he has cast in Congress, and distorted them in an effort to mislead people. “IT IS ASTOUNDING that tny opponent accused me of trying to keep my record a secret, but his own campaign literature doesn’t even give a clue about his own background, what he’s been doing for the past lOyears.orwhy he is qualified to represent nearly a third of our State in the United States Congress," Hughes said.

“People don’t want to hear constant carping and complaining.” Hughes continued. “They want public officials who come forward proudly to talk about their positive accomplishment. and their programs for the future’’ HUGHES CITED his own leadership in the 200-mile . limit, tanker safety, ethics in government and regulatory reform as major initiatives. “At the same time. I have been able-to cut red tape tof hundredsof worthy projects throughout South Jersey, including saving NAFEC and beach stabilization." Hughes said. Hughes also authored the 1981 ocean dumping ban. "Since 1 have been in the forefront of balancing the federal budget, strengthening our national defense, and genuine tax reform, people need a reason for wanting to change leadership at this juncture.” Hughes said. Hughes, who is eligible for several Subcommittee Chairmanships in the next Congress, said he would continue to run a positive campaign that stressed his past accomplishments and overall legislative program.

Fox Claims

‘Neglect’ Of Housing

COURT HOUSE-Beecl. Fox, Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd District charges that Rep. William J. Hughes’ neglect of housing problems in the district is hurting builders, realtors and potential home buyers. "The construction and housing needs of the district have become more pressing over the past several years, but Bill Hughes continues to ignore them," Fox charges. CITING A Market Opinion Research report, Fox notes that 47 per cent of the people polled in Atlantic County say the lack of housing is the most difficult problem facing

them. "And according to the National Association of Realtors, the problem will get a lot worse before it gets any better,’’ Fox warns. The NAR reports that if Hughes’ votes became policy housing starts in the district would be 26 per cent lower in 1980, and home sales would be off by almost 15,000 units. PROJECTING FUTURE trends from Hughes’ votes on housing measures, the NAR predicts housing starts would be off by 31.4 per cent by 1985, and home sales losses would be 23,000 units, Fox says.
