Community Club Opens Season

CAPE MAY - The Women’s Community Club held its first meeting of the season at the Historical and Community Center. Tea was served by Mrs. William Boyd and her hostesses. Mrs. Pliny Fleming, chairman of the American Home Department, told of the origin of the department and how it serves the hospitals and institutions in the community. MRS. JOHN STOUT, narrator of the Social Service Department, assisted by Mrs. Joseph Poole and Mrs. Jean Berger, co-chairman, conducted a discussion about the articles that have been made for hospitals, nursing homes and institutions. Also included in this program was Mrs. Johanna Ridpath, who sang two of her own compositions, accompanied by Reginald Brown. The next meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 20.

Install DIAMOND BEACH — The annual luncheon meeting of the Cape May County Retired Educators' Association was held at the Holiday Inn here for the election of officers. Mary Lennon, president of the state association, stressed the need for aid for those teachers pensioned before educators were included in social security. J. Harold Connor, a member of the county group and vice president of the state organization, was introduced. The guest speaker, Congressman William J. Hughes, stressed his interest in education for both the young and adults, praising vocational courses and deploring financial cutbacks. He described'the congressional committees of which he is a member and their functions, expressing keen interest in giving power back to Congress as a means of cutting red tape which costs llOObillionayearand contributes to inflation. ON THE SUBJECT of senior citizens Hughes said he is opposed to limiting the amount of money made while collecting social security, the advancement of the retirement age from 65 to 68, and cutting back the cost of living adjustments for social security recipients. He said he’s also convinced that there should be a correction in the interrelationship between home health care, the nursing home and the hospital to ease overcrowding and cut costs for the patient. The installation of officers was conducted by the state association president.
