The Old Sport had the honor and privilege of presenting the American Legion Citation and Award to Donny Richter who attained the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held in Rio Grande on Saturday night. Donny is a member of the Middle Township High School football team and earned his final Merit Badge by installing scoreboards for the Little League Baseball games at the field in County Park East. Donny is a fine allaround American boy and this is only the first step in a career of leadership in the Boy Scouts. His parents, Don and Janet, can be Justly proud of their fine son. v • • • Here are the contents of a letter received by the Old Sport: "I am writing to tell you that I enjoy reading your column about the local high school teams (that makes two, Wilda Jackson also enjoys it). But I do have a favor to ask. I think there should be more coverage and recognition given to Middle girls’ teams. "The girls’ hockey, tennis, basketball and softball teams are all good with good coaches who are just as dedicated to them as the boys’ coaches are to them. My sister is on s*me of the teams and we try to see all of her'games as we watched- my brother’s. I think that it would be rewarding for all the teams to have the coverage as they do not have as many fans as the boys and they are good teams. Thank you for your attention. Sincerely, Mrs. Anne Matagulse" I thoroughly agree with yoq, Anne, but in my defense, I have two reasons for not giving the girls more coverage. This writer is not a fulltime reporter and cannot possibly cover all the sports at Middle High. I wish that I could. I have asked the girls' sports coaches to designate a girl, player or manager to give me the scores and statistics, and I will gladly write them up for the newspaper. I have also asked Phil Heck's journalism class to become reporters for me; and although they would not get paid, they would get their name in the paper,
besides gaining valuable experience. So I plead guilty to the charges and will have to suffer the consequences. I know there are many people who feel the way Mrs. Mata guise does. • • • In the meantime, Donna Orbane's tennis team has won the CAL championship and Debbie Clifford's field hockey team has been getting great coverage from the other news media sports depts. • • • Sorry to hear that Chock Dougherty is in the Shore Memorial Hospital with a virus infection. Hope he can soon shake it off and get back to school This reporter has no one to debate sports with. Get well soon, Chuck. We all miss your smiling physiognomy. • • • Because the Ha mm on ton game is Homecoming Day with all kinds of activities scheduled down on the field, we’ll have to postpone the flag football game between the Democrats and Republicans until the next home game which is with Delran on Nov. 22. This gives Capt. Dave May «.nd Capt. Mike McLaughlin time to practice and get their teams in shape for the contest. My apologies to Chuck Mcllvain who was the first proponent of this game and hasn’t been given the credit due him.
CAPE MAY - The Cape May Public Relations and Recreation men’s and women's competitive volleyball leagues volleyed into action last week. In women’s action, the sister tandem of Sue and Debbie Brett sparked a stunning upset as their Ocean Academy team downed defending league champion Cookie Nook II 15-12,10-15,15-13. THE NEEDLERS II behind the excellent serving of Skip Axelsson then burned the C-View Inn 15-10,15-13,16-14. The Men’s league is showing overall balance such as it’s never seen and should be a dog fight all season. Library III of Ocean City came from behind t defeat MVP Sports Center Riffraff 8-15, 15-10, 15-12 to begin defense of its 1970-80 title. MVP RIFFRAFF then rebounded to hammer Dare Realty of Wildwood. Sports & Stuff, formerly Sports World of Cape May, stopoed the Avengers cold 15-8,' 15-5 after being drubbed 15-3 in game one. Tom Beheler and Bill Bezaire led the comeback with timely and consistent spiking. Schramm and Hallman built early leads in each game and eventually submerged Kramer Beverage inthree straight. Stuart Cohen’s front-line power and the setting of Tom Roth were an unbeatable combination.
