Practice
(From P«te 30) specific skills and general appreciations and understandings. Physical education is an important part of the formal process of education, for a sound mind is only half of the human entity. Able bodies are just as important. The two are inseparable. A high school athlete team, then, should represent the ultimate in physical abilities. Any successful grouping of special studenU can provide school spirit and a sense of being, whether it be a marching band, football team or debating society. But if any of these take away from the primary goals of education, they are depriving not only the participating members but also the student body as well.
A high school student is at or approaching the peak of his or her athletic prowess. But if he or she isn’t prepared academically (mentally) to face the continuous rigors of successfully raising a family and/or contributing to society — then all the phys. ed. training and athletic ability will be for naught. Coach Bill Garrison may have, at long last, helped provide Lower Cape May Regional with a winning football season; that's for certain. But the attitude of the coach and, especially, those of his ilk on the board of education, raises a very serious question when it comes to the success of the teaching/learning process and the young men and women — on and off the playing field — being affected by this attitude.
