CAPE MAY - We are building for eternity . " That comment by Rear Admiral Ross Trower. Chief of Navy Chaplains, summed up the spirit as Adm. John B. Hayes, Coast Guard commandant, and honored guests gathered to break ground for US. Coast Guard Training Cape May's new chapel. The concept of erecting a new chapel was formed in ' 1960 as part of an overall Training Center development and reconstruction plan. Efforts to make the chapel a reality gained momentum in the latter half of the 1970s, with fund-raising drives accumulating some $29,000 in donations. THE GROUND-BREA-KING ceremony of Oct. 30 was the culmination of yeare of effort. The bell which will toll in its tower was first installed on 14foot Bank Light in Delaware Bay in 1892. Just as the bell represents the past, the young recruits who will attend the ser-
vices at the Training Center Chapel represent the future. "We are buildif|g a provision for the spiritual needs of our young men and women," Adm. Hayes said. Assisting in turning the arth for the chapel were. Rear Adm. Trower, Rep. William J. Hughes, Cpt. James R. Kelly, commanding officer of the
Training Center; Cmdr. David S. Gemmel, commander of Coast Guard Group Cape May; Training Center Chaplains Cmdr. Joseph N. Frates. USN. and U. Cmdr. Thomas C. Marsden, USN; and Rabbi Seymour Atlas of Beth Judah Temple, Wildwood. The chapel construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 1981
