Chiimici: No To Gasoline Sales Tax
TRENTON — Assem-
blyman JosephChinnici(R., Cape Cumberlnad) is vehemently opposed to any attempt to impose a state
sales taxon gasoline. Chinnici, a member of
the legislatore’s Joint
Committee on
Appropriations, made his friews known following a proposal offered by N.J. Transportation Commissioner Louis J. Gambaccini, who said it would raise $200 million per year
for the state treasury. ••THIS IS A horrible
proposal and it comes at a time when the.taxpayers of our State have made it very clear that they are against politicians and bureaucrats who are spendthrifts," said
Chinnici.
Motorists are already paying 8 cents per gallon in gasoline taxes dedicated to the state, and to increase the bufden on motorists would be totally unfair, the Bridgeton legislator said. ••!M> PER CENT of the driving that the public does is because of necessity, not pleasure. People have to get to work, shop for food, and run the errands that accompany everyday life. To further tax them for this cannot be justified. Its not like there is any public transportation alternative for them, since public transportation barely exists in South Jersey," he
continued.
State officials have indicated the gasoline sales
tax receipts would be spent on improving public transportation, but Chinnici said there is no guarantee the money would be allocated to South
Jersey projects.
••I FEEL ITis also wrong to ask motorists to pay taxes so they can subsidize rail and bus riders,” Chinnici added. "I am all in favor of improving rail and bus lines but this is the wrong way to go about it," Chinnici said he expected the proposal to come before the legislature shortly since it proponents hope for passage at an early date in an attempt to avoid the •'Political fallout" during the 1981 State Senate and General Assembly races. "What this boils down toi, is an attempt to shove through this bad legislation and hope that the voters will forget all about it. The voters are smart enough to recognize this tactic, and they will remember,” he
said.
