Bv David WHuImtk KRMA — A swarming (aper secondary picked off IiHir consecutive passes from FlPasantvilles sophomore quarterback Sam Terry and converted them all into touchdowns *>n route to a 41 0 drubbing of < I 71 IMeasantville last Saturday in the Caper homecoming game here With the victory, the B-0-0 Tigers clinched at least a tie for their first Cape Atlantic league title since

1953 The Capers also secured a spot in the state playoffs for the first time as they prepare to meet probable opponent Overbrook High Schook in a battle of undefeated South Jersey powers. TIIK C APKRSgot off to a quick start as senior safety Bobby Menz interc«*ptied a third down Terry pass and returned it to the Oreyhound 30 yd line. The Tigers then kept it on the ground with junior Joe

Gilmartin blasting the final 17 yds on five consecutive carries for a 7-9 lead after Scott Hiller added the conversion. On their next possession, the Greyhounds managed to ground out one of their seven only first downs behind the tough running of senior tailback Curtis McAlister (33 yds.), but saw their drive halted by Caper linebacker Will Streaker as he intercepted Terry’s second pass attempt and sprinted 32 yds down the sideline to the Pleasantville 6 After two incomplete passes, fullback Steve Carty rumbled six yards fora 14-0 lead with 4:26 remaining in the first period. I,ED BY STREAKER, the Capers denied Pleasantville a first down and took over on their own 39 after a 35-yd punt by Mark Mare. Despite a barrage of penalities, the Tigers used 22-yd scampers by Carty and junior Mark Lare to travel to the Greyhound 10. where senior Mike Craig rused in for the score. Fullback Tom McGann scored on a two-point conversion for a 220 lead with 8:51 left in the half. After McAlister again ran for a Greyhound first down, Clark Lare intercepted Terry’s third pass. From the Greyhound 20, Carty took command, carrying twice down to the 8, where quarterback Lare threw a touchdown strike to tight-end Henry Burton fora 29D lead at 5:28 WITH 3:2# LEFT in the first half, safety Craig

grabbed Terry’s fourth pass attempt and returned it to the Caper 39. Then, instead of running out the clock, the Capers uncharacteristically rubbed more salt In the wounds of the Greyhounds with a 61yd. scoring bomb from I .are to Menz for a 35-0 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter which saw Pleasantivlle mount their only serious drive - 48 yds, behind McAlister and a 17yd. pass from Terry to split end Ken Willis - the Caper’s Fran Sullivan thwarted to drive with the fifth interception. WITH 9:15 LEFT in the contest, Streaker broke through and blocked a Greyhound punt, returning it to the 5. where Mark Lare ran in for the final Signup Set CAPE MAY - The Department of Public Relations and Recreation will conduct registration sessions for youth street hockey and basketball Saturday, Nov. 22. score of the afternoon. Promising junior runners Louie Washington, Joe Vitale and back-up quarterback Ray Obst ate up precious time, and Pleasantville's last possession, sophomore Bill Porter grabbed the sixth ‘interception as time ran out.

It was the Greyhounds fourth consecutive loss but with a freshman team that is so far unbeaten, the future looks bright for Pleasantville. With the victory, the Capers joined Mainland, Cherokee, and Overbrook high schools in the Group III South Jersey playoffs.
