POMONA — Assemblyman James R. Hurley has stated he wants any master plan to restore storm battered coastal communities to include the Delaware Bay shore. He called it the most devastated area In the state as a result of the Oct. 25 storm. Damage has been officially estimated at $19.6 million. The Cumberland-Cape legislator also told the Division of Coastal Resources hearing on the Shorefront Protection Master Plan that it should discard any idea of "confiscating private property and abandoning the already developed barrier islands." Hurley urged the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection act as part of the master plan.
THE HEARING AT Stockton State College was one of several being conducted throughout the state by David Kinsey, director of tWe Division of Coastal Resources. Referring again to the barrier islands, Ocean City, Seven Mile Beach and Five Mile Beach, Hurley told Kinsey, "If you are honest and sincere with us you will give up this effort to move people off their property. Instead you should promote the partnership which we thought we had a right to expect when the 1977 Shore Protection Bond Issue was conceived and passed.” Hurley said the $300,000 master plan had one virtue: "At least it established priorities and Ocean City and Seven Mile Beach are high on that priority list," he said.
