by DavM Wetaberf VINELAND - In th* battle here la»t Saturday of two undefeatad South Jeraey football power*, Overbrook linebacker Leon Inge recovered a Caper fumble and sprinted 20 yards to paydirt to lead the Rams to a 13-0 victory over laower Cape May, shattering the Tigers' dream of an unbeaten record and a South Jersey football championship. Both teams got off to a shaky start as the Capers lost a fumble on their first play from scrimmage on their own 35 After Overbrook gained a first down behind the tough running of fullback Chris Short <132 yards), the Caper defense turned away the Rams as Tiger safety Chris Si monsen recovered a Ram fumble. WITH THE CAPER defense repeatedly stopping Ram threats - led by defensive tackle Joe DiGilio and an interception by Caper linebacker Joe Gilmartin - the Capers began to establish their running attack with Filmartin and Mark Larc banging out tough yards, and the two teams appeared headed for a scoreless deadlock in the first half. With 9:17 left in the half, Carl Robertson sacked Overbrook quarterback Shaun Dun net for a fiveyard loss Tiger Mike Craig fielded the Ram punt but

fumbled after a vicious hit. Linebacker Inge scooped up the loose ball and rambled 20 yards for the score as the Camden County team carried an unexpected 7-0 lead into the locker room. OVERBROOK PICKED up where they left off, taking the second-half kickoff and using over seven minutes to drive 69 yards behind the powerful running of Short and Tony Mumford (94 yards) to grab a 13-0 lead on a oneyard plunge by Short with 4:23 to go in the third quarter.

At the beginning of the fourth period, the momemtum shifted as Caper linebacker Will Streaker gave the Tigers their best field position of the game with an interception on the Overbrook 24. Aided by a pass interference penalty, the Tigers drove to the Ram 11, but on third down bad luck interrupted an intended touchdown pass from Clark La re to Scott La Flam in the person of Ram defender Clyde Holmes as he picked off the pass on the two-yard line. THE RAMS then ran off an 88-yard drive, using up precious time, until the Tiger defense again rose to the occasion and stopped Short at the Caper 10. It was too late however, and the Capers ran out of time at their own 21-yard line. Tomorrow, (Wednesday) the 8-1 Capers go against archrival Wildwood at Maxwell Field in Wildwood at 1:15. A Caper victory over the Warriors will clinch the first Cape Atlantic League championship for Lower Cape May since 1953. (Literally, it would be Regional’s first title, since the high school changed address in 1962 from Cape May to Erma.)

by David Wetaberg The packed auditorium recently at Deptford High School signified the rising popularity of the sport of bodybuilding in the South Jersey area. With the crowd politely cheerinfl every contestant, regardless of his muscularity, 25-year-old Wildwood resident Mike McVan came back from a poor eighth place showing in September to capture a fourth-place trophy in the novice division of the Mr. South Jersey Bodybuilding Championships two weeks ago. "I KNEW I’D DO much better this time,” says McVan, co-owner with Mike Wuko of the Olympus Gum in Wildwood. ”1 weighed 192 pounds for the Mr. New Jersey contest in September (in which Wuko finished fourth). The judges told me I was the biggest guy there, but I just wasn’t defined enough. I had two months to lose at least 10 more pounds. ” He is no stranger to losing weight. After gaining an interest in weightlifting that saw his weight increase to 250 Avalon Tennis Winner COURT HOUSE - Town Team Tennis recently began a new season at Jersey Cape Racquet Club, Nove 11, Tuesday. The opening night’s rounds saw the challenge of Avalon Real Estate and the Whitebrier. The men’s singles event got the Whitebrier off to an early lead with Ted Ferrante winning 8-6 over Avalon's Doug Newbold. They didn't hold that lead for long, however, as Barbara Kerr fought to an 8-1 victory over Martha Turkington which brought the score back to Avalon’s favor. THE MEN'S DOUBLES event saw the team of Anthony Zurawskl and Ed Evanchyk down Avalon’s Dave Kerr and Larry Runke by a score of 8-6 while the ladies’ doubles team of June and Laura Mossbrook responded by beathing the Whitebrier ladies, Helen Libro and Carol Decinque, 8-2. The final match ol the evening ended in a victory for Avalon’s mixed team of Karen Wetherill and Lyn Smith as they scored an 8-5 win over the team of Tracey Dimming and Stan Hollinger. The final standings at the evening's end saw Avalon Real Estate come out on top by the impressive margin of 36-24. Rec Programs Take Holiday CAPE MAY - The Department of Public Relations and Recreation announces that all recreation programming will be cancelled Thanksgiving Day. All pre-registration classes will be rescheduled and madeup during the ensuing five weeks.

E unds, the versatile :Van decided to try his hand in boxing, and left for Las Vegas to Ufln. From December 1978 until he returned 36 days later to reach the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Golden Gloves tournament, McVan's weight dropped from 250 to his fighting weight of 156. AFTER HIS BOXING success, he decided to try his skills in competition bench-pressing. Last March, a 248-pound McVan appeared to win the North America bench press title with a lift of 415 pounds. Then, he began training for bodybuilding. "People ask me how I can gain and lose so much weight,” he explained. "I live by a simple theory. Whatever the mind can conceive, the body can achieve.’ I’ve done okay with that philosophy so far,” he Boasts. Mike then trained six months for his first physique contest, dropping 56 pounds in the provess. After his disappointing showing, he turned to partner Wuko, brothers Pat and Brian, and girlfriend Debbie Castaldi for the inspiration that resulted in his rise to fourth place two weeks ago. NOW MIKE is faced with a decision. 'Tve given up bench-

pressing because I don’t like to weigh so much,” he sighed. “Right now, I’m tom between boxing and bodybuilding. I’m going up to Harrison, N.Y. to visit Debbie for Thanksgiving. I’ll make my decision after talking to her.” Whichever sport he chooses, with his determination, McVan is sure to be a winner.
