"We’ve done pretty good got three drum this morning. and a thresher shark that almost took Wilbur off the beach '' That was the opening remark that J«h* War Gregor greeted AnHv Grace. Carl Unger, and I with as we started to unload our trailer at the Atlantic View Hotel in Hatteras He and Wilbur Ostrander .lr. had been fishing the hook at Cape Point; and .loe had 26lb . 22lb . and 20 pound red drum that night they went back and Joe got a 28'v pond trophy channel bass, which was just about the only drum taken during the whole week we stayed on the Outer Hanks. Hill llalhniner and John Fisher had gotten in the day before, and I .like Cordner drove in about tlxsame time we did with Charlie Mnralbes. ol Bridgeton coming behind him Charles Kant*. Ie«Kant/ his father, and Hob Kant/. Charles’son, ami chariev llaff also arrived along with John !Vfanganaran. AND TURN THF. wind started to blow Sunday most of Ihe gang spread out to the beaches north of us where' Joe had gotten his drum while I had dinner with Capt. Krnal Fatter after church Capt. Ernal said the weather didn’t look loo good for the offshore trip Bill Halbruner and John Fisher were planning, but that there was a good chance of catching some king mackerel as there was a load of boats in Hatteras cnmmercialling these long,

slim fish.

When I got back to the hotel Boh llertzog had arrived with his grandson Itichir Itayser. and we all started to get ready for a week of fishing. Most of tin* fellows came back from the beach early, and I waited for Frank IMneltnr to come in to take him surf fishing The reports weren't very good - just a few small blues - then Frank didn't get in till 9:30. so we

decided to wait till Mon-

day.

BOB HERTfOG and Richie had stopped at the Kitty Hawk pier and caught about 50 small blues and some flounder which Richie released. Monday morning the wind starte:! blowing harder southwest, and everyone slept late Andy Grace Carlinger and I tried the beach at False point, but there was nothing there so we moved up the beach, fished awhile,

and came home.

Thai evening Charles Cant/.. Bob Kantz and I tried the False Point, but all we had were small blws there too, and on high tide the wind came around to north-west and really beht us off the beach. Tuesday dawned very windy with a strong NW wind dirtying up the surf. Capt. Bill Foster sent word down from Nags Head that it wasn’t fishable so Bob Hertzog, Richie Rayser and I got in Bob’s van and headed fpr

Ocracoke.

looking for Capt. Thur*! GaskiH. who wasn't to .be found Jack Willis told us. "If you want to find Capt. Thurston, don’t go looking around the island for him. if he wants to find you. stand right still, and he'll practically walk over you." We continued on around the south side of Silver Lake, pausing once to look at the trawler "MoJon" which Bob had worked on and talked to the skipper of her for a minute.' As'we headed for the famous Ocracoke lighthouse ' we saw a new dock with dipt. Norman Millers name on • it. so we stopped in therie lo meet Capt. Norm who rims .. the party boat Rascal. Bob jokingly said to him. "How about drum'fishing

today, captain?"

Norm replied back just as fast. "Sure, this is (pod drum weather - come back around noon, I’ll take you

out."

THE WIND was blowing about 25 knots SW. so we went back to Blackbeards restaurant and had some clam chowder while Richie

polished off a dish of Chocolate ice cream. When we got back Cap* Norm had the Rascal ready. She’s a Harken Island boat, and we rode .lie back of Pamlico sound with comparative ease, and anchored off a shoal in Ocracoke inlet. Right after we settled back on anchor, I got the first and only drum bite on my part of the

trip.

That drum took two nice runs, and then threw the hook, and at the same time one of Capt. Norm’s poles started bucking off, and when Bob Hertzog picked it up the line parted. After that the sharks started to bite, and we all took turns catching them, but that was all she wrote for that"

trip.

It was pretty blusterly on the shoal that day, but Richie Rayser rode it out with us like he was part of the boat. We stopped back to Blackbeards restaurant because Richie had noticed they had pizza (hisfavorite food). We picked up a large one to go. and ate it on the Ocracoke ferry back to

Hatteras.

WHEN WE ARRIVED at the Atlantic View Ray Gray met us with the statement: "Your gang took off out of here like butterflies in a rainstorm" The only ones left were Andy Grace. Bill Halbruner, and John Fisher. BUI and John were packed, and they took off Wednesday morning after a cup of coffee in the bridal suite with Andy and I. On Wednesday afternoon the wind dropped off a little so Bob. Richie. Andy, and I tried a slough off the face of the Hatteras beach where some big blues had blitzed for a group in the morning. All of us caught some small blues, and Richie and I wound up with double headers which Richie figured would be good for

bait later.

We put in a call to Capt. BiU Foster and he opined that he would take us out Thursday. So Bob and Richie and I boarded the Albatross!! at 9, and after quite a bit of manuvering because of a king mackerel I trip on Monday, we got under way with Capt. Oliver O'Neal as mate. We ' looked over the North shoel

in Hatteras inlet, but it looked too rough, so we headed over to the South shoal hoping to find a school on top. Not finding any, we anchored on a spot in a gully, but even though

CAPE MAY - Sports N Stuff behind the resurgent Bob ‘Spike’ SmeKier, Bill Be zaire and BUI Garrteoa tamed a wild Kramer Beverage aquad despite the forceful play of Ernie Troiano and Jerry Griffin in Men’s Volleyball League play Nov. 24. All three games were close and not decided until the final few points were

scored.

MVP SPORTS - Riffraff survived a solid effort by Schramm k Hallman as well as their own disorganization to defeat their foe 15-13,11-15,17-15. BUI Arnold’* spiking and blocking and the enthusiastic serving of Brendan Rosenberg carried MVP lo that critical third game triumph in over-time. IN NOV. 21 action MVP Sports-Riffraff came from behind again to win a tough match by seizing the final two games of their match versus the Avengers. Rick Ferrante, Bob Jackson and Bill Arnold slowly turned the tide in favor of Riffraff with

strong spiking.

Sports ’n’ Stuff utilized the consistent serving pf Tom Beheler and Terry Brown and the front-line power of BiU Bezaire to whip Dare Realty of Wildwood and Schramm and Hallman in con-

secutive matches.

Dennis ville Road.

we smelled drum all we could catch was sharks; so

we came in at 4 o’clock.

I FELT A little sad as we arrived at the dock because there’s talk of Capt. BiU retiring, and this will probably be my last trip with him. We hung around the dock and watched them

unload King mackerel. ™ _ Most of the boats had 800 to (JUD forming

900 pounds, and it was quite a sight to sec that many kings in one place. I called Capt. Thurston, and he said he’d be glad to take us out Friday, so we figured we had one more chance at those drum. Capt. Thurston said he had a man who would like to go with us, and we agreed readily. When we arrived at the dock to board the South Wind we met Bob Rollins of Charlotte, N.C., and he turned out to be an ideal

fishing companion.

Capt. Thurston anchored on the same shoal in Ocracoke inlet, and we fished it for five hours, in which time I caught a lb blue, and Richie hooked and landed a Vi Ib Rounder which he released-then we hauled anchor and started looking. Right in the middle of Ocracoke inlet Capt. Thurston found a school of slammer blue fish, and we went to work on them with Hopkins, after I landed one trolling

with a sea witch.

BOB HERTZOG lost a couple which bit his line, and then Richie connected on his 10 Ib test rig, and it kept him fighting the fish all over the boat. He Anally landed it with his grandfather's help, and it was the biggest fish of the day a 141b beauty. Bob Rollins caught the next biggest a 13 pounder, and Bob Hertzog and I had to be satisfied

with 12 pounder.

We didn’t catch any drum, but Richie’s 14 pounder made him king for the day. Capt Thurston Gaskill left us with this remark: “I certainly waa glad to see you fellows,, and next year fm going to catch a drum with

Richie...” ►
