hunting laws for details of the regulations and the list

of designated areas

TIIK DIVISION pointed out that the special pheasant and quail stamp, which costs $15 this season, was approved by the Fish and Came Council to help pay lor the cost of raising the birds at the state game farms by having the people who hunt the birds meet

Bag Doubled By Bowmen

TKKNTON State bow hunters twigged a record high of 4.7W> deer in the just Concludifl season, doubling the mark of Z.JHI set in Hf77 Cape May Hobih I foods iieqounied for 4f> of that total, up from 1& last year and l«in IttfH The State Division of Fish. Came and Wildlife

attributed the increase to three factors: an extra week in the season, good weather on opening day and throughout most of the season, and the second deer tag provision which gave hunters an incentive to report their deer Also, 444 hunters were successful in downing a second deer

most of the costs. Since only about 35,000 hunters were using the areas, the intent was to make the program as nearly self-paying as possible in much the same way the trout stamps pay for trout production The intent was not to increase the numbers of birds prdduced but to keep up with rising costs brought about by inflation Archery Workshop MAYS LANDING Atlantic Community College will offer a collegecredit archery workshop for the seventh consecutive year in January The workshop will meet from 6 to 9 p m Monday through Friday for two weeks, beginning Jan in Jonathan Pitney Hall on campus here. Just before I left Hatteras I received a complimentary membership from Trout Unlimited with a nice decal for my Land Rover. Now, I’ve always heard "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth and I’ve never understood that saying, Well, when I got back from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, there was a full set of the Trout Unlimited organization’s by-laws and projects waiting for me, and on the third page of these documents it stated that they were supporting the Dingbell-Johnson legislaP*ion, and calling for extra taxes on articles used by fishermen, so this was one gift horse that I should have looked in the mouth. I WROTE A letter the next day saying that I could not accept their membership, because I have been fighting for two years now against a salt water fishing tax, and I returned all their literature except forthedecal which I ruined when I scraped it off the window of my Land Rover. I also made some suggestions as to how I thought the fresh water fishing boys could regain money for conservation thorugh another source by doing away with their big money derbies, and going back to trophies — thereby

using the thousands of dollars in prizes to conserve our vital resources, (this is not a popular belief, but I am known for my individual throughts >. I am not a complete purist when it comes to fishing, but I do believe that we are all paying enough taxes now. DOWN ON THE Outer Banks they have given new name to stabilizing Oregon Inlet. They state the engineers claim that they will not have a "New Jersey-ization" of their inlet by using their groins, because we did not do sufficient maintenance. This time they are going to put holes in the groins to allow sand to go through. This reminds me of the story about tf»e little boy sticking his finger in the dike over in Holland however even though there is visual proof that groins don’t work, there are still in the dike over in Holland however even though there is visual proof that groins don’t work, there are still. enough greedy individuals around who will try to sell their plan to the public to gain their own needs, which, in this case, is a clear and deep channel to a new and very expensiv port at Wanchese, North Carolina. ON ANOTHER side of the coin, the boys who are commercial fishing king mackerel in North Carolina are headed the same route as our menhaden fleet, our

clammers. and our scallopers took. They are harvesting those fish with nets and electric reels, and even through the conservation authorities have put a 15-box limit on their catches they will find a way around this too. At least Uiey now have a limit, and in the case of Oregon Inlet, the engineers still have to get the Department of Interior’s approval to construct their beach-eaters. Hopefully, the preventive measures are in time, but over the years man has done some terrible things to his environment. NOW. AFTER all this editoralizing I ought to bring you some fishing news. So far, big stripers have not shown up in the Rips or on McCries shoal. Some big bluefish have, bu: they seemed to have moved on South. There are some 12 to 14 inch stVtpers beinp taken off the jetties, and a couple of the party boats have done well on sea bass, but that's all I definitely know about. Last year the big week on stripers was at the end of November, and I believe the season is about two weeks late. If there are enough boat anglers left in December, we’ll see if I’m right. Of course if the wind keeps on blowing like it has all through November we may not see any catches, because its just been too rough to fish, and that sort of weather can ruin any run of any species. I’ve been trying to get fishing on weekends ever since I came back from Hatteras, and we just haven’t had any decent weather.
