Optimists Keep Up Traditional Youth Service Optimists - Friend of Youth Since 1419. Individual Optimist clubs existed as early as 1911 tfhd in 1919 Optimist International was formed. Today it is the (ourth largest service group, with 3.500 clubs and 125.000 members. There are 52 clubs in New Jersey and three of these are in Cape May County. Wildwood is the parent. organized 45 years ago. and has sponsored Lower Township and Middle Township. Middle was formed in 1975 and has 30 members from Avalon. Stone Harbor and Dennis Township as well as Middle Three special "weeks" are observed by all Optimists — "Youth Appreciation" in November. "Bike Safely in April and "Respect For Law" in May. The latter had as many as 60 students participating, visiting county facilities and attending several Middle Township com mittee meetings. Mayor Sam DeVico worked along with Pat Peterson and Ed Walsh on this project V P Paul Thompson engineers the bike safety and bike rodeo program in cooperation with Middle Township police. A new event was added this year: V.P. John Roberson and Phil Heck arranged a day when students took over the administration of MTHS. Phil wears many hats in this club. He is Youth Activities chairman and serves on the Board of Directors; he is a past president and a charter

member.

BOB WELLS, PRESIDENT. TELLS ME that other special events are an oratory competition for 8th and 9th graders and a spelling bee for 1st. 2nd and 3rd grades. CharloUe Harmon. Principal of Elementary No. 1 and the PTA assist in this project. A science fair is planned for next spring for 5th and 6th levels. Also a Christmas party is given for 30 special education children, with Santa

presenting gifts.

Doug Griffin, Secretary-Treasurer (and a past president and charter member) is the Bingo Man. He organized the games that are played every Sunday evening in the Avalon Community Hall. This is the club’s principal fundraising project and it is hoped the number of players will continue to grow. Each year a scholarship of$600is given to a MTHS student and next term an additional$500 will be , given to a girl and boy from Avalon in appreciation of the

use of the hall for bingo.

Bob Hentges, Ron Kludiuweit, Oscar Updike. Bill Watson and Norman Gabriel complete the roster of directors. Carl Baker, a past president, has advanced to Lt. Governor of all the Optimist clubs in this area. Bob Sweeney was,charter president. A member-guest meeting will take place on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Middle Diner and the club is hoping for a good attendance. One Optimist can benefit 20 kids. Men who care about our youth find this

affiliation very rewarding.
