The Mispatcher’s desk is manned 24 hours a day and when a call is received the dispatcher will activate the fire sirens as well as the fire radios in all the firemen’s homes with a touch of a switch THIS NEW SYSTEM; replaces the street fire alarm boxes which have been in use for nearly three and a half decades. These street pull boxes were costly to maintain and were the source of many false alarms. Even strong winds could activate the pull boxes, causing a false
alarm.
Fire Chief Douglas Stanford stated the borough studied three independent systems and decided the radiocontrolled system was the most practical and less, expensive to operate. He added that very few communities continue to use street puli boxes and a study over the past eight years disclosed only one fire being reported from the 47 boxes located in U\e borough. In reporting a fire to the police 368-2111 callers are requested to give name, street location and house number to the dispatcher who will activate the fire sirens and alert the firemen simultaneously by radio control.
