Vows Fight In Rural Police Cut

MILLVILLE - Assemblyman James Hurley said last Wednesday that the rising crime rate and a threat o! a cut in state police protection in rural South Jersey communities as a major concern. The Assembly Minority Leader said there was further "aggravation of fear" in his Cumber la ndCape May district following a statement attributed to Attorney General John Degnan at a New Brunswick gathering earlier last week. The state's top lawman

was quoted as saying a study recommending State Police involvement in urban crime fighting could lead to a ‘redefinition’ of the traditional rural responsibilities. “I have expressed the opinion that if he reduces rural patrols at this time there could be a major upheaval of puhiicaninicn of large proportions,’’ Hurley said. "Reactton of my constituents against the centralization of police power evoked the use of the phrase ‘police state* which

has a sinister meaning for many people. "Running alongside of this reaction has been the fear that rural State Police patrols - already meager enough but reassuring, especially in my district • will be further reduced as a result of this so-called 'rf definition' of rural responsibilities. “I will do all in my power to exert pressure against it in Trenton and I will urge municipal authorities to make their feelings known," Hurley asserted.
