Sounds

With Christmas rapidly approaching and records still being the easiest gift to buy, the labels are rushing out the big name artists to bring in the seasonal dollars. As of this writing, Bruce Springsteen's “The River" (Columbia) is at number one on the charts, and it looks as if it”U fill more stockings this holiday season than nay of its competition. Due to legal problems and then trying to pick the "best" songs from the many recorded, "The River" was delayed numerous times. Musically, it offers no real surprises. His sound is still gutsy, moving rock and roll-based on classics from the sixties- with streetwise

lyrics.

Bruce Sprinsteen sings in a simple, direct voice, perfect for rockers as well as ballads. Sprinsteen fans will agree the long wait was worth it. ALONG WITH THE Cars, Blondie, The Clash, and Elvis Costello, The Police are proof there is a sizeable market for new wave rock in the States. "Zennyatta Mondatta" (AAM) is an extremely likeable collection of reggae tinged rocere. The songs are infectious, rhythmic, and fresh. Sting’s vocals have a crisp, live feeling to them, which coupled with the trio’s basic, yet full, sound, make The Police sound loose and natural. The Police are obviously going to be one of the biggest groups of the eighties. THE MUSIC OF the Art Emembk of Chicago isn't for everyone. Leaders in the jazz field, their highly complex music scares off more people than it entices. However, as their album. •'Full House" (ECM),

By Charles P. Lamey shows. The Art Ensemble of Chicago write and perform very emotional

music.

They can be exotic, traditional, or avant-garde, so one never knows what to expect from the band, yet they fulfill the wishes of their rabid cult following. LINDA RONSTADT's "Greatest Hits Volume Two" (Asylum) isa/airly decent collection of recent singles, perfect for the nonfan who doesn’t already own all her albums. Included are such smashes as "It’s So Easy," "I Can’t Let Go," "How Do I Make You," and "Tumbling

Dice."

Linda's greatest hits collections always show her to be a much underrated singles artist' especially when compared to her often uninspired long-players. Linda Ronstandt’s singles are uniformally overwhelming. Merger Is Called Off ATLANTIC CITY - Joseph F. Bradway, Jr., chairman of Guarantee Bank here and Robert P. Hawkins Jr, President of the Burlington County National Bank of Medford, announced that the boards of directors of both banks have mutually agreed to terminate their previously announced agreement of merger under which the Burlington County National Bank would have been merged into Guarantee Bank. Anticipated regulatory disapproval of the issuance of capital notes in connection with the financing of the merger was cited as the chief reason for the termination of the agreement.
