Nursing Home Is Lesson In Caring, Sharing Christmas at Crest Haven Nursing Home is truly a time of caring and sharing. One cannot help feeling depressed when entering a complex of this kind, but my spirits were lifted immeasurably several days ago while talking with staff members of this institution. Robert Pastoria. administrator, his dedicated co-workers, and interested volunteers, have provided the residents of the home the attention and personal touches that are so necessary for their well-being. Mary Welnbergef. director of recreation, and her aide. Alberta Seto. have arranged delightful holiday entertainment. with county schools, churches, service clubs, and individual musical groups taking part. The day 1 visited. Dennis Township school band presented a sprightly Christmas concert. Rosanne Donohoe. director of social services, says that musical programs are very important to the residents, as well as visitors from the outside. THE HOME HAS BEEN colorfully decorated by the staff and volunteers and gifts have been coming from many Cape May May Countians. including a pound of home-made Christmas cookies for every resident. Florence Warrington, director of volunteers, is very much interested in getting Bingo going at the home and hopes that county clubs and organizations will sponsor this _ activity, and possibly take over the operation of the games. There is a great need for volunteers, both men and women, to make life more meaningful for the residents. One can read to those who have lost their sight, or write letters or shop for them. A training program for volunteers will be intiated in January and the staff is hoping for a good response. Two volunteers who have been especially faithful at Crest Haven are Cecil Jones and Catherine Borella, who has over 2,000 hours to her credit. Maud Samson. RN. director of nurses, has a fine staff providing^-hour care. When the nursing home complex was created in 1952 there were 90 residents and now there are 140. One of the pillars of Crest Haven was Administrator Alma Jowett. who retired in July after 25 years of service. What a good feeling it is to know that there are people who care about our ill and elderly citizens and who help to bring sunshine into their lives. Let's start the New Year right: “Adopt A Grandparent.'’
