OMITTED IN THE LIST of All-Star basketball players at Middle High School was Richie DeRose, who played before \he new high school was built, and the team played all its games away from home He was just as important to his team back in the 50s asRlcky Harmon was in the 70’s. He went on to the Naval Academy and now has a good job in Washington. Let’s hear from you fans who have a favorite all-star of your own. • • • THE OLD SPORT has been reflecting on the lack of success by the Middle Boys' teams. Here we have the best band in South Jersey Dick Ludwig's cohorts have brought back all kind of awards from their competitions - The chorus is outstanding in its field and boasts of two All-Star Boys in the chorus. The N.J.R.O.T.C. Unit under Cmd. Cornell and Chief Ryan always give a good account of themselves wherever they appear. Their most recent being in the Garden State Bowl at the Gftints Stadium in the Meadowlands. JOSEPH STEADY’S science students seem to win the Science Fairs all the way up to State and Regional triumphs. Middle Girls have won CAL championships in Field Hockey and Tennis. But what is wrong with the boys? According to experts, the Midget Football program is a great success, developing good players and winning league titles but when they get to high school they become losers. * Why do good athletes quit the team during the season . and others not even come out for the team? IT HAS HAPPENED in baseball, track and footballwith excuses given as going to work to buy a car, going hunting in the fall and other such reasons. The Old Sport knows of at least two athletes who could be playing on the basketball team, but who won’t even come out for it. This was supposed to be the year that Middle would contend for the CAL championship, but first Chick Ludman resigned as coach, then Doug Fulford transferred to Lower Cape May and now the team has a record of one win and two losses. What is the answer to Middle Twp’s problems?
MIDDLE ATHLETES have won positions on some AllStar teams. Art Cannon made the press All-Star team.Mark Garcia and Chris Nichols made the All-Area soccer team and Kim Shelton was picked cn the field hockey team.
