Atlantic League opponent Middle Township and preserved their unbeaten record with a hard fought 58-54 victory at Middle last Friday night. Caper B'bali: ‘Wait & See’
ERMA - With five out of the top seven players from last seasons 14-13 team lost to graduation — including 1979 leading scorer John Halbruner - the Lower Cape May boy's basketball squad will "rely on their verstility of three top players" In their bid to better last season's record, according to coach George Holden. "We’ve beaten two good teams in Clayton and Middle so far (running their record to 4-0), but that's deceiving," explains Holden. "We ll just have to wait and sec. Realistically, we re shooting for a fifteen win season." WITH FOUR wins already under their belt, the Caper’s may outdo Holden's prediction.
In senior Kyle Anderson, whom Holden considers "one of the better players in the Cape Atlantic League.” senior Randy Clark, and junior Greg Douglass, the Capers have three 6'1" players who are capable of playing any position. ‘Their versatality makes up for our lack of height." says Holden. "They give us added flexability because we won’t lose as much through subsitiutions." TWO S1X-FOOTERS-senior point guard Steve Puller, an exchange student from Australia, and senior forward John Bassett round out Jhe starting five, while seniors Willie Johnson. Jesse Johnson and junior Keith DeCollewaert provide strong bench strength. With their quick 4-0 start, including a well deserved win over Middle Town-ship-considered by Holden as one of the teams to beat in the league title race—their momentum may result in the Capers' providing a strong challenge to Pleasantville and Wildwood in a close league race. "We'll just have to wait and see," the coach noted.
