CAPE MAY - The city department of Public Relations and Recreation conducted the first annual Cape May Street Hockey Invitational Saturday, Dec. 13, at Convention Hall. Participating hockey teams were Lawton of Philadelphia, Wildwood* Cape May Court House, Somers Point and the Cape May Bruins, sponsored by the City Public Relations and Recreation Department and coached by Charlie Hickman II. IN THE DOUBLED elimination invitational which ran straight through from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lawton of Philadelphia and Cape May survived as the finalists. Lawton moved into the championship round with a 2-0 record, having captured the .winner’s bracket by defeating Cape May. 2-1 and WildwoodCourthouse 7-0. Cape May battled back after dropping that tough 2-1 decision to Philadelphia on a goal by the tournament's most valuable player. Tim Greer, late in the third period to gain the finals. AFTER LOSING to Philadelpliia the Bruins mauled Somers Point 7-1, sending them home with their second loss on the strength of Jim Peck's three goals, then eliminated WildwoodCourthouse in a seesaw affair by a score of 5-3 as Darren Ilickock and Mark Peterson carried the scoring load. The final game saw Lawton of Philadelphia break on top quickly with first period goals by Dave Lynch and Greer. Cape May responded on Jon Axelsson’s third score of the tournament. Axelsson was one of four outstanding players in the runnrng for the MVP trophy. The others were teammate-goalie John Pirnik and goalie Tom Schied and Greer of Lawton from Philadelphia. The remainder of the first period and the entire second was an exhibition of defensive excellence. Lawton finally broke through with a long slap shot off the stick of Ijutv Franks in the third period to clinch a grueling 3-1 victory over Cape May and the tournament championship trophy.
