Twp. to Check Up on Shut-Offs

.by IJ*«y Frit* VILLAS Cold weather can be a threat to survival, and during the winter it is a major concern for everyone that their homes have heat and warm water For most it is a matter of being careful and thinking ahead paying attention to proper insulation techniques. perhaps leaving faucets dripping to help prevent pipes from freezing and bursting in ex tremely cold weather, and paying utility hills on time. Howevel*. for some'people even more protection may be necessary This is a concern that township solicitor .lohn Callinan brought forth at

the Dec. 22 Lower Township Committee meeting, when he sug gested that the township request a daily list of disconnects from the N.J. Natural Gas and Atlantic Electric Company during the chilly winter months IT 'WOULD BE a confidential list he explained, first sent to the township clerk, then forwarded to the Board of Health for further investigation. Mr Callinan's idea is particularly designed for the protection of people whom he termed “Mentally incompetent" and unable to pay their bills when they should. THE MOTION of ap-

proval was moved by Commmitteeman Moran and seconded by Mayor Tom Clydesdale. Committeemember Peggie Bieberbackl voted no. She felt Mr Callinan’s intentions were good, but that the resolution should be reworded in order to avoid an invasion of privacy for those who are disconnected but not necessarily “mentally incompetent." For some folks a utility disconnection could be due to a mere oversight and that should no/ be knowledge to anyone but themselves and to utility company, Ms. Bieberbach suggested.
