- In the relatively abort time aince the brutal murder of John Lennon. . if# atlll Impoaalble for thla writer to dome up with a fitting tribute. How can there worda describe the inaplration he gave me both aa a peraon as well as a songwriter and critic of popular music. With or without The Beatles. John Lennon was an extremely talented songwriter, who could make the most basic, lyric '■explode with passion. As a vocalist. hi# clearly distinctive colce will mahe it, nearly impossible to listen to Beatles'" records without shedding a tear. His recorded legacy lives on to influence generations not even born. Bu*. the man who gave so much joy to the world is dead A man who preached love and peace deserved a much better fate. Although The Tide Is High is a cute, reggae tune that sounds great coming* over a car radio. "Autoamerican" (Chrysalis) is. by far. BlondieV worst album. The fault doesn't lie with the talents of the individuals, in the group. In fact. I>ebhie Harry is in fine voice and Clem

Burke is still one of the better rock drtfmmers around. But. the group tries to cover too much ground — there's disco, rock. MOR, electronic, reggae, etc. — and end up with a complete mecs. Blondie will bounce back, but this really Is a waste of

vinyl.

Not so with David Bowie's "Scary Monsters" (RCA). After several entertaining releases that failed to attract much attention, Bowie is back with memorable songs, with a touch of theatrics. ' Scary Monsters" will win back the fans he lost when he started to become interested in electronic music. One of I980's best releases. , Never being a fan ofHearfs albums, this new release. “Greatest Hits/Live" (Epic) is a treat. The live sides are rather tedious, as onstage the group falls back on every heavy metal cliche. The •greatest hits" is a completely different story.

By Charles P. Lamey | proving Heart makes incredible singles — just listen to "Crazy On You." "Magic Man." and the new one "Tell It Like Ills." Ann Wilson is an underrated vocalist who can be raw one minute and smooth and delicate the next. They've got the tunes and the singer, but they still need to trim away some of the excess. Still, this isn't a bad album to pick up on. A good last minute Christmas gift would beThe Doors' "Greatest Hits" (Elektra). As the group is probably more

popular now than when they were together, these sides show Jim Mormbnwas a dynamic frontman, who brought to life even the most mundane blues inspired rock song. Fortunately for the listener, these songs, including "Light My Fire," "Riders On The Storm.” and "Hello I Love You" stand on their own. A powerful.* important American rock band that refses to remain buried in history books.
