weather sets in, what bet • ter time to review all the goodies of the 1980 season in fishing, and other activities here on our Cape of

Nature?

First the mackerel. Those Bostons were a little slow arriving — towards the end of March, if I remember corrtktly — but they stayed around quite awhile, and everyone got^ - freezer full if they really

tried.

RIGHT IN THE middle of the changeover from mackerel to Drum, Mario Andretti, arrived to open Breakwater shopping

staterecord. It was the biggest drupi I’ve ever seen. In between ell these activities we Sandwiched in a trip to Hatteras, and I wound up with a 27 lb drum from the shoals of .Ocracoke. It was the.bigjttst red drum in the Cape MaV Co/Hatteras anglers club contest until this fall when Joe MacGregor lopped it with a 28' 2 lb. beati-

BACK ON THE local scene those big weakfish were everywhere in the Bay, and a few times thii? season I actually saw boats moving off of them to try to

test line. Gary, of Murphy Mart, received notification from I.G.F.A. the day after . Christmas that his catch has, been officially recognized as a world record in the saltl.G.F A., 1 but in my book he and Cape May County deserves the recognition. MAR UN SEASON started and the canyon got hot. South Jersey Fishing and Hunting center’s tournament produced 127 white marlin, and the season was on Rod Smith of Cape May got a 680 lb. blue marlin, and Cpt. Donald Rosemnn scored big with a 498 lb. swordfish. This year the new crop pf young skippers

irt Cape May really produced. Fall wound up with I6ts of bluefish. after a late sum * mer run of flounder, so all in all 1980 was terrific The theme this year was “take a Kid fishing." Boh Hert/og and I did that with his grandson Richie Reyser down in Hatteras. and Rich showed us how to catch a 14 lb bluefish on 4 lb test LAST MINUTE Hi Thompson was telling me that Cpt. Frank Cassedy was catching a fCw Boston Mackerel out on Five Fathom Bank, and lhat horn dog sharks are bringing a good price in the' wholesale seafood market.

County Veterans cem*tery This was also a big year

was dedicated. •

By May 8 the big drum, tide runner weakfish, and slammer blues were all

over the Bay. and everyone diu hi.uks moved over tirned to fishing in earnest, into the Ocean, and night There was a big run ot real- chumming boats started

- ai.au u uig jrvai for sharks. Head boats ran many charter parties for the "Jaws" trade, and a lot of big ones were taken. BIG BLUES moved over

ly large drum early in the spring, and those big tide runoer weakfish were right therq, with them. Party boats, private boats, and head boats all fished hard, and terrific catches were

made

THEN THERE was the Lower Cape Optimist Drumfish Derby, and in the contest John Tunbelly caught a 102 3/4 lb. black

bringing in record catches. This went on all summer, and more big blues were taken at night than in any season I can remember In the. middle of July those big weakies were all over the Ocean, and the weekend after the fourth I just happened by Joe Rodia’s in time to get a pic ture of Gary Rudy's 10 lb. 4 oz. Iveakie taken on 4 lb
