One of the toughest columns I write every year, and perhaps, one of the most pleasurable to me. is when I look into the crystal ball for the coming season^ and try to figure outw^ going to happpiK'Iri our piscatorial wgfld. I get morr plcasiu'e OUt of It, because you always enjoy a tough job when it is done, and if I tylt 500 on my predictions ! feel as though I’ve accomplished something Last year I did pretty good, so let’s see how I do this season First species is mackerel, and I foresee the Bostons coming the last week in February Tib predicting mackerel early,
early because I’m agreeing with the Farmers almanac that it is not going to be as severe a winter as last *a (some oT my friends 'say I’m crazy and point to all the balls on the holly trees, but I’m still going to stay with the, people who have beeji predicting seasons for lf»4 years NOW. PROVIDING the Bostons get in here early, it will take the sting oot of missing codfish (I’m.sorry, I don’t see apy Cod being caught except way up North and way offshore.) And that will open up an early run of big slammer blues, which I believe will continue all spring and summer. Blues of all kinds

will be prevalent in 1061, because their stocks are growning constantly; and even chumming parties are not diminishing their numbers. Probably the reason they are not being overfished is because they are not of much value commercially. I don’t believe hook and liners can overfish a species, but add netters and the new sophisticated gear like temperature readers and white line recorders, and public demand — and you can come up with an endangered species. .
they’ll peak from May 19 on into the first week in June. Weakfish will be right there with those big fellows, and we may see 1980 repeated when they outnumbered* drum, and anglers left them biting to search for the bumpers. FISHING WILL again be offshore in the Bay. Hie flats are polluted worse than in previous years, and early In the season the action will again be up the Bay, around Bug light, but in the middle of May the area around Brandywine shoal is going to produce the heaviest.

ALONG WITH AN early run of big blues (Bay and Ocean) I believe the big yellow-tail weakfish will be back. Some of these tiderunners will be taken around the end of March, but riot in a great quantity, because our local anglers don’t start for them till mid to late April when they go after black drum. The first black drum will be taken April 19 (that’s early!) and those big humpbacks will be more predictable this year. They’ll have an early run in mid-April, and do good the second week intoay — then
By Bill Sherman Middle Twp. split a pair of overtime games last week, beating Wildwood 5956 in an overtime and then losing to Pleasant, 81-68 in a double overtime. The latter score belies the closeness of this game because it wasn't until Middle lost Derek Williams and Frank Brown on personal fouls that Pleasantville was able to pull away in the second overtime. ' FOR MIDDLE David Smith was high scorer with 19 points, while Kevin Jaudon and Dawson Spaulding each had 15. For Pleasantville, Davis and Fountain led with 20 and 21 points respectively, and Sanders had.19. In-the Wildwood game, Derek Williams led the Panther scorers with 18, Kevin Jaudon had 13 along with Dawson Spaulding. Frank Brown scored the winning basket in the overtime while Derek Williams added a free throw. FOR WILDWOOD. Bob Shafer led all scorers with 22, while Calvin Hayward had 12. 1 Middle's record was 4-4 prior to Tuesday’s game with Wildwood Catholic Wildwood was 6-4, with 2-3 record in the Cal. Pleasantville is 9-1.
water will provide more sharks. Fishing for “Jaws” will outweigh swordfishing this year, as I expect night swordfishing to take another downturn, because the broadbill swordfish is going to have a heavy toll' taken of them commercially as the scallopers and Lobster boats go longlinmg
for them.
In the middle of the summer I look for flounder to really show, and I believe there will be an abundance of flatties this year. CANYON FISHING will be back, and I believe we are going to see even better white marlin fishing this vear along with some heavy tuna catches. Don't look for too many wahoo or sailfish, but I do believe that dauphin (not porpoises) will be abun-
dant. Blue marlin will again be taken, and they will be in better quantity too. Canyon catches will be better, because we are getting more knowledgeable • about our way of fishing lures, and our'boats are getting faster. GAS PRICES will go up, and money tournaments will be the order of the day. There will be more competition this year among the head boats and charter boats, but somehow fishermen will find a way. to go sport fishing. All In all unless we get into something unforeseen, like a war, 1981 should surpass 1980. I’ve probably missed some species, and haven't touched on new products enough, but that's the way I see it for this season.

Stripers are again going to be scarce (I believe their cycle is in the low ebb. PCB's and other pollutants are causing them to be almost endangered) along with kingfish and croakers (none of these species will produce heavily). AFTER THE spring run is over (I also envision better channel Bass fishing in the South, too) big blues are going to be the mainstay of the charter fleet and the night chummers. One type of fishing that will get bigger will be shark fishing, and warmer
