And so January goeth. Bit of a. January thaw’s been at hand. Mild air and balmy temperatures. A delight! Nobody seems to know why in late January, following severe weather, there's generally a warming spell. Country folks have recognized it for years. Makes one think of late March, of crocuses and shedding heavy garments. But, alas, it doesn't usually last. It helps tho to ■ ease us into February, that shortest month on the calendar which often seems like the longest moi. . of the year. GROUND-HOG DAY is coming up next Monday. February 2nd. According to an old legend, the ground-hog, or woodchuck, comes out of his burrow on this day. If he sees his
shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter, and he goes back to sleep. If he does not see his shadow, he stays up because winter is nearly over. Did you know the ancient Romans gave February its name? The Romans had ceremonies at this time to make themselves pure; the Latin word februare means to make pure. From what we’ve read about some of those Romans, they really need&l to do that! HAVE YOU TRIED Capt’n Ahab’s for olde fashioned country dining! Remember the days of country dining when folks drove their buggies out of town to have a delightful meal? Well, Rio Grande, location of Capt’n Ahab’s, on Rt. 47 (Wildwood Blvd.) (Page 15 Please)
